Elk in the heat (Oregon)

Anybody hunting the opener of archery elk in Oregon? My dad drew an any elk tag in NE Oregon and the plan is to go down the first couple days of the season to see if we can get him on a bull before they get pushed around by hunters too much. If we aren't successful, we will be going back around the 17th of September through the end of the season if needed.

Hoping we can have a few cooler days for the opener but its a crap shoot. We are headed down end of this week to check a few cameras and do some scouting of a few spots we have hunted in the past.

I will be down there.  Elk/bear hunt, and check the cams to see what is around.

Will be out for the opener in our usual spot.  12 days is still too far out to trust the weather forecast, but theoretically it is supposed to cool down a little for the opener in the area we hunt.  But we hunt a higher elevation so it's typically not too bad.

Tell your Dad best of luck Adam. Talking to ranchers down there they advised that. they pull cows out of the back country the first week of August and the wolves follow them out. Once cows are removed they stated that the wolves then start targeting deer and elk. It really slowed down the second week of Sept and lots of wolf sign it seemed.

Thanks Tom. Last time we hunted the unit the elk were in where we hung our stands the first few days then headed out until the rut got going. I am planning to leave my old man in a stand for a day or two so I can drop down way over the edge and down towards the river.

In years past, the cattle were all over the place and it made it a pain in the arse but so far scouting this summer, the cattle have been a lot lower and I hope it stays that way!

Not hunting the opener, but the long-term forecast I've read shows that the entire season is dry and plenty warm.  Looks like some mid-days in the hammock or risk pushing the elk from their beds to who-knows-where. That is always the conundrum for me.  Plenty of elk get shot mid-day v. plenty of elk leave the basin when pushed from their beds.

Hope your Dad slays one.

I live in La Grande. I'll be in the elk woods quite a bit. I'll keep you posted on what I'm seeing/hearing.

I agree and it’s always a tough choice. I do enjoy a nice mid day nap in the shade leaned against my pack after a nice lunch.
