My Dad told a story of a buck his good friend had shot north of Winthrop, it took them 2 days to get it out to a road,(East Chewuch Rd.) this was early 1950's. They loaded it up and came to a Dept of WILDLIFE check station, the officers asked if they could take out the the rig and weigh it, Dad said,,"oh ya go ahead" Dad said they just stood back and watched the officers struggle to get it weighed. All said and done it weighed 346 lbs. Would have loved to see pic's of it but don't know of any.
One season,, when I was young the temps were warm so I took my deer down to the cooling locker in downtown Twisp, it was skinned, all the fat cut off etc. It weighed 183 pounds and I was pretty proud, well they hung it along side a buck that had the head cut off, it was hooked half a foot higher than mine and the neck minus the head was dragging the floor, it was skinned too, it was huge, had to be at least 100 more pounds!
So, 500 pounds,,,,
What a BUCK that would be!

Man some people are easily offended.. what gets me is not that one guy exaggerates and says he got 250# of boned meat off a Mule deer. It’s the people who are soo experienced that come to back him up. And They get upset when someone says “hey wait... there are 600#+ mule deer out there”? Can’t we just all agree bigmacc was incorrect.. guesses, and stories aren’t worth much.. If there’s anything we should all be able to agree on these days is that deer are not as big as elk  :chuckle:

I disagree with you. A big mule deer is as big as a small elk. :chuckle:  Sorry, cant help myself sometimes :sry:

I will chime in one more time.

The reason I opened this thread was to, hopefully, start a discussion about big Methow mulies.  It was not meant to disparage anyone.  It was certainly prompted by a claim of a deer taken this season in the Methow:

"I just got back, I was fortunate enough to have killed a big 4 by 5, 388 lbs and thats not counting the pile of guts, got close to 250lbs of meat..."

That prompted a flurry of discussion.  It was pointed out in that thread, not by me, that the formula for how much meat is yielded from a deer is around 40% of the live weight.  250 lbs. of meat would make that deer weigh over 550 lbs. on the hoof.  Discussion rightfully ensued.

It's not me that needs to grow up......it is the posters here who cannot get into a discussion without calling people names.  A claim like the one made about this deer is fair game for discussion.  People will come down on all sides of the discussion, but it should remain civil.

Agreed. And there is a protected group of people on this forum that you aren't allowed to disagree with. It gets old.
what in the wild wild world of sports???

I just want macc to repost the pic since I didn't get to see it. I've seen some huge body deer and just last year off the flowery trail I saw a cow moose that probably weighed 1500#, not even joking, don't believe me, oh well. My older brother shot a buck up off Ruby Creek North of the training center that was a hundred in human yrs and had only about 10 teeth left. It weighed so much we had to make a pole to hang it and pack it out with three people. It had an old Roman nose and huge feet. Never weighed it so I can't say what it weighed but my brother is one of the strongest men you will ever see. Not even exaggerating. He can curl 300# and it still took three of us to carry that gutted deer! So maybe it was 400#? Doesn't really matter. Shouldn't the success of just getting the deer be the merits, not the size?

Shot me a black baar once way back in 06 i think it was naw naw naw 15 yaasss that's when it was. Anyways back in 1865 I shot me here this big old Grizz I means Black baaar. Purity near weighed in at 3000 lbs maaan whooee he was a bigg un thar he was. Big and black as coal he was big a black I say...
Anyways me and this big Grizz, uh er black I mean he was a starring right at me, just a beggin me to shoot. We'll After Ida got back up me gumption I did just that i shot him righh there betwixt the eyes ya see right betwixt the eyes. He dropped so hard my teeths fell out right then and thar..
Well I takes me out my gutten and skinnin knife and begin to gut out this here Grizz er I mean big black... and he up and slapped me with his paw. You see that thar barr was not dead yet so I stuck him in the heart then he expaired right then and there. Well I finally get this big black guted and I then thar notice I have to yet drag this here big critter out so, what do I do? I walks all the way back to camp three days and night back to camp to git me my Uncle to come help me.
Wooo wee that thar is a drag out I never want to repeat. But we had grease and meat for nye onto 6 months I tells ya...
LOl
but not making fun just got into story tellin session to see if I could match up.
Now yeah maybe I guess but from what I know most mule deer would only weigh in at about 250 lb to maybe 300lbs on the hoof and that would be some pretty big deer.
I was reading though the other night about some deer in the North woods... As in Maine or Canada they get pretty big I guess so...?

"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter
