Absolutely not!!!!!  If it does there is a defect in the locking mechanism or you are hitting the release lever without realizing it.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Call NEF, if you send it back have them do a trigger job. It's free and it is night and day different. It is also a good time to have another barrel fitted to it.
Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

You might check out ( graybeard outdoors ) forums. They have a dedicated NEF section. There is a handi rifle faq's sticky there and has a bunch of trouble shooting topics.

The old lady bought me a NEF 10 gauge when I was 19. Used to get after the geese hard and heavy, it was just what I needed for those looong shots. Well about every 4th or 5th shot the action would break open and kick the shell out. Never thought anything about it, just banged geese with it...

Are you shooting new factory or reloads?  I have a .223 version and won't always lock with a particular brand of "re-manufactured" ammo, because some of the cases were slightly stretched when previously fired in a different chamber... probably military.

New factory loads. I guess when new, it is recommended to close the gun more forcefully to seat the lock mechanism. Mark
