Yakima Tribal Police in Castle Rock/Kelso
« on: March 12, 2022, 09:59:41 PM »
My son-in-law was coming back from town today, and said the Tribal Police were dipping smelt along the Westside Hwy.   Just curious as to...why?  Also, do they have to be so flagrant about it?

Don’t know about the yakimas, but the Umatilla tribe has a season from February through march no limit.  https://ctuir.org/news/2022-cowlitz-river-smelt-fishery-for-ctuir-tribal-members/
Probably why non tribal only gets a few hours.

Ancient heritage on historic fishing grounds?😅 Good for them. Entitlement means do as you please because everyone will look the other way.

Years ago on the Nisqually we used to run into gillnetters from different tribes. Some guys from the Lummi Tribe told us they fished there under some kind of a reciprocal agreement since the Nisqually had a very late chum run  :dunno:

Many January days spent standing in 2' of muddy water, dangling a green corky and yarn. The runs were impressive. Remember the Satsop?

Amazing how 50% of total expected returns became the measurement for commercial (tribal) and then the leftover fish become a "slow return" and cause early closure...
.
I will say that if it wasn't for the tribes needing these fish, they would be catch and release, selective gear rules only...
.
But what happened to "in common with the citizenry"?
.
I don't get to catch and retain fish in waters that are being commercially harvested because of "low returns"
.
But the fish barely make it past the nets..
.
I am an ignorant anglo Saxon American by birth, and bad at math, but should not "fair and equitable" mean that subsistence relates to personal consumption, not monetary gain?

.
I'm not saying the rules should not apply, I am just saying they should apply to all.

Wondered what the Federal Game Officer vehicle I seen yesterday was doing.

It made more sense to me when I realized our half wasn't like me and you, but it's WDFW that gets half.  Sometimes we get that, sometimes not, all depends on what they want to do with the commercial/recreational spit as well as how bad they want to fight lawsuits, collect data, play politics and the host of other reasons we might not get access to 50%.

the amount that the state graciously allows us makes the drive not worth it! why not just let a 5 gal pale full? make it worth fuel and time?
