Montana late season elk
« on: September 27, 2022, 02:07:48 PM »
Anyone heading to montana the last week of the season to try for elk? Due to circumstances, it is the only week now that we could possibly go to try and fill tags. We are normally in western montana chasing mountain whitetails the last week of the season but having an elk tag this season, we are thinking about going back to Central Montana where we archery hunted elk in the past. My biggest concern is the weather and if we can get my trailer there along with getting into the areas we have hunted. All else fails, we will just hunt our normal deer area and most likely eat the elk tag.

Good luck!  I went earlier and will be back for rifle.

I went to my trusty elk spot and found deer.  Then I went prospecting working on a new deer spot for November and bumped elk.  They don't cooperate sometimes.

Thanks. If there isn't too much snow, I think the area we archery hunted should still hold elk but only one road in and out so if the weather is nasty, it could change our plans. Good luck to you as well

Only week I can go with my work schedule is last week of the season. The area I know in Central Montana it would be over an hour drive to the nearest motel if the roads were clear...

For sure. One benefit of where we normally hunt in western montana is its about a 12 minute drive from the motel parking lot to where we park to hike in. Pretty dang nice

I will shoot you a PM later this evening or tomorrow. I’m in Helena. Don’t have a ton of local knowledge but happy to chat and will be around until thanksgiving (driving back to Chelan to my parents for thanksgiving) if you needed any help or place to park your trailer.

Daughter has Elk and Deer tag.  Due to her school schedule, we'll be there last week of the season also in November.  Hope weather cooperates.

Good luck. I would love for it to be cold and a few inches of snow
