Mushroom growth
« on: October 25, 2022, 01:29:09 PM »
Does a mushroom "patch" only have the capacity to put up a certain amount of mushrooms in a season, or will it continue to produce after being picked as long as conditions are right? In this specific case I'm talking about Suillus (Slippery Jack). I have a couple go-to suburban foraging spots that just popped off since the rain, and I'm wondering if I should keep going back to them.

They should keep popping as conditions are right.

We're getting to the end of their season - maybe another month.

These guys popped for the first time within the last 4 days with the rain, and they were already a little bigger than I'd like. I'll keep dropping by every day or two. They get smoke and dehydrated and are the base for a yummy spice mix.

They stop after the first frost. Your creation sounds interesting.

It started several years ago with a bunch of mushrooms and my pepper plants needing picked before frost. I smoked, dried and ground it all together and it made a crazy good spicy, earthy mix.
This year I have a quart jar of smoked, dried and ground jalapeno, habanero, serrano, Thai, poblano and Anaheim chilis from my greenhouse, and have been waiting for the mushrooms to come along. Once I get enough I'll start working on the proper mix.

First batch was really wet, so I'll dehydrate half way before smoking. There's always a little extra protein when dealing with Boletus/ Suillus, if you know what I mean!

Very interesting, AP. I've tried them and didn't like the high acid in the flavor. Maybe I'll take a second look.

Nice I am also interested in seeing the results! My wife has started pickling them. I found 2 lions mane and 2 bears tooth this last weekend. Wanna try some new things!

I love to fry up bears tooth like crispy onions on burgers.
Tried to hit spots found them last year but no luck
