Opinions?
« on: July 05, 2009, 09:51:38 AM »
I need some opinions on this issue.

I have been waiting for a small bear rug for going on three years. The excuse is that every tannery in the country shut down for two years. Apparently this is an ongoing excuse with this guy. I have mostly kept quiet until last week. Finally I told him that I am sick of it and I really don't care if he actually has the rug or not. I just want to get my deposit back. Like magic he says that it should be ready on Tuesday. I told him if it is not ready by Friday then I will be sending him a formal letter requesting my deposit returned. If he completes it I am more than willing to pay him for it but if he does not do what he was hired to do then I want my money back According to him I am, "One of Those," for even asking for a return of the deposit.

Any opinions??

The fact that you have waited three years shows you have way more patience than i do.  Under no circumstances should a bear rug take that long, nor anything for that matter.  Does this guy have a full time business with a working shop or does he just do it on the side?  I don't know how far you want to take it and what the bear was worth to you, but it really sounds like you have been had.  Either he damaged your bear beyond repair or it has been lost in mail between him and tannery, either way it does not sound like he just has it laying around and is neglecting to finish it.  Make sure you tell him that taxidermy is all word of mouth and you will be sure to never recommend him to anyone.  By the way, i do taxidermy and he is totally lying about the tanneries being shut down.  Sorry man

I have two opinions based on personal experience.
1. He does not have your bear and is waiting for a suitable replacement.
2. You are the average joe, has high profile clients that come first and you are at the end of the list.

My brother and I waited two years on bear mounts and they weren't ours. The mounts were bigger.

Now my brother waited two years on a bear rug for the taxi to finally call and say it wouldn't make a good rug. So we are going on a third year for the shoulder mount.

He said that all the tanneries were shut down for 2 years?  Thats bull.  If that were the case over 1/2 the Taxi's in the USA would be out of work or back logged for several years.  Sounds odd to me that he would put you off for 3 years and than all of a sudden say hey it will be done in a few days.   Not saying it isn't but it might not be your bear.  If he does it out of his house part time it may be that he spent the deposit $$ on something else and just now got the $$ to do it.  Either way 3 years is a LONG time to wait for any mount.

I just got done buying a house and movng it and my shop and I am about 2 months behind on my normal turn around which is under a year.  I should be caught up in the next month or 2 and than I will be back on schedual.  I can't imagin having someone wait 3 years.

My sister-in-laws boyfriend is a taxidermist. He's also in Wenatchee. Maybe you'll want to use him in the future! He's pretty good and even donated a mount for the NRA banquet.

If he does complete it as he indicated - take some reference photos with you, so you can tell if it is the same animal or not.  If there are no distinguishing marks, it will be pretty tough.

Get the bear whether its yours or not, if its not, it really sucks, and I would probaly tell him my feelings, and tell every hunter you know not to go to him.   :twocents:

Wenatcheejay,

I had taxidermy problem a few years ago in Wenatchee too!  Same guy????

My Grandfather had an oak rocking chair in the dentistry office foyer I remember seeing and probably sat in when I was very young.  I inherited the rocking chair from my Grandmother and planned to have it reupholstered in a tanned elk hide I would kill in the future.  I was successful for several years straight but taking the hide out was never feasible, but the rocker was always on my mind.

Finally it all came together in 2004; nice WA archery bull, excellent hide, I caped and field cleaned it; not fleshed, packed it out with stock, and he was in the hands of the taxidermist about 24 hours after the kill.  My instructions were clear - tan the whole hide in a light chocolate color.

Several months later I inquired on the hide and he advised it should be back anytime.
A few more weeks go by and he calls. "Your hides are ready"  I say "Hides, you mean hide?"  He says, "You dropped off two pieces didn't you!"  Well we go back and forth a few times and I hear this, "Oh, I think I remember, it was dirty and had gone bad and I had to throw it out."

$100 deposit was given to him when I dropped off the hide.  I paid $75 more and picked up the two pieces of hide he had for me.  Yeah, I know pretty weak, but that's what I did.  I'm obviously done doing business with him.

The rocker, well it has the mystery hide on it and looks very beautiful.  But every time I look at it I say to myself "That Mother^&(&^r"

Show up to his business with a gas can and a lighter then ask him if he has your rug... Whoops, did I say that out loud?
Just kidding obviously, but it makes a guy feel like it.

unfortunately i to have been in this same type of problem with a grouse i dropped off with a taxidermy in ellens burg WA.  paid in full was my first mistake.  second was way to passive for the first year 1/2 , finally threatend court against him and what do ya know it was done next week.. one problem it was a blue grouse i dropped off a ruffle.  this really pissed me off since it was my sons first grouse. >:( was told it got mismarked with another one in freezer. finally 2 months later i get a ruffle 1/2 the size i dropped off. :bash: :bash:. once again threatened to sue for services not rendered. finally got refund and was told to keep grouse, dont know what happend to mine... what a flake. dont know if i should post business name or not???  my  :twocents:is always go with a highly recommended place not the cheapest.  seems to work out way better in the end...

No I do not have it back. But, I guess I am overreacting since I was promised, promised that it will be in on Monday (As in four days ago.) That was only the fifth promise since soliciting opinions here. We had harsh words last week where I basically said I have no faith in him doing the work and I want my deposit back. To that, he just ignored the comment and said it is on it's way from the tannery. He is in Idaho but I don't want to badmouth until this goes to court or I get what was paid for. I know there are Taxidermists on the site but this guy is a ridiculous flake. What makes me the most angry is the blatiant dishonesty.

I kind of think you should tell us who it is. What if one of us gets screwed by him? Thats not cool. If your story is true you really should let us know who to avoid. My 2 cents.

Well another couple months. Today he actually said, "What are you expecting it in or something???" I told him, "Yeah five months ago I was told it is in the mail." He said, "I know." (And  :chuckle:.) I hung up.

He is a total thieving low life lying piece of crap. AVOID HIM

ARROWHEAD TAXIDERMY out of Idaho. His name is LARRY...

Court is the only alternative to taking it in the butt.

I waited another month before really badmouthing him. Now, If I ever see him, I will say it to his face.
