Last chance or 1st chance?
« on: December 06, 2007, 07:55:56 PM »
Taking the wife out Sunday and Monday for a final effort to get her first elk with the muzzle loader.  Anybody want to point us in a good direction for units 564, 568?  A long hike won't hurt us.  Our schedules won't let us hunt any more.  She is our last chance of putting meat in the freezer :EAT:   Maybe we'll be alone on Monday :)
Economy failure = Too many people spending money they don't have on things they don't need to impress people they don't like.

Stella is still open for 3 point or better. Maybe not your best chance though.

Battle ground has a little land that is OK up behind Woodland on little Kalama river road, and Kalama on China something road. Basicaly there is some timber lands right neer the power and gas lines that hold some elk. You wont be alone.

Washougal is a big unit. The elk I know of in the unit tend toward the Girl scout lake area and Jackson pass/Jones creek areas. Its all timber and state land around the two areas. There is also a decent herd that hangs around the Three corner rock/Radio towers area. Again you wont be alone.

In all these areas the elk tend to travel through alot of it, but only realy hang out in several small holes. If you dont know the holes it can be a challenge to find any sign of elk some times. Driving the roads looking for elk will be futile. You will need to hit the brush and hope you find the hole they are hiding in. Its an ocean of reprod and it can be discuraging to just find a place that looks good to walk into.

Think reprod with pockets of wet swampy alder thickets where others dont tread because they iether overlook it, or think it is too much trouble. Also I wouldnt suggest calls, they often work against you in these hard pressure areas.

Expect to see just about every muzzle loader hunter in the state that hasnt punched a tag. I will be in Washougal trying to help my brother in law punch his.
