Fairchase or no?
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:16:40 AM »
I just found out the other day that bowhunting deer on base here at Fairchild will be open and it got me thinking.  This being a military installation, obviously it is completely fenced.  Which brings up an interesting question.  Is it fairchase or is it a modified version of a high fence hunt.  We all have our opinions on what fairchase is, so here is a synopsis of how it works here.  We have a 40 acre plot of land set aside for wildlife.  Every year Environmental determines if hunting will be allowed.  Anybody who wishes to hunt the "back 40" must pass an accuracy test consisting of a 3 arrow group at 30 yards.  There are a lot of deer on base, both mule and whitetail, and the herd needs to be managed.  We are restricted to that 40 acres ,there is plenty of escape routes, and these deer aren't tame.  Based on that information, what do you think?

I don't know about the definition but if they can run out of that 40 acre plot it sounds fair to me.

You say there are a lot of deer and its only 40 acers, so in my opinion, no its not a fare chase hunt and it was never meant to be one. Its a meat hunt, nothing wrong with it.

I said there is a lot of deer on base, we just get to hunt 40 acres of the base.  The deer roam free pretty much wherever they want to.

Ironically, right after I posted this I got an e-mail giving info.  The season on base will be the 16th to the 25th.  State regs apply.  Proficiency test on the 9th.  I'm doing it.  Nice right after work hunt.  And there are some toads out there.

I would say fairchase. If the deer can run out of the 40 acre plot your allowed to be on than not a question.  Your helping make a healthier population and filling the freezer.. It's a win/win.  Kill a monster and let's see the pics!

There are many airports that are fenced in this state that have huge amounts of timber and agg fields within them and allow bowhunting

I believe it is fairchase. Have fun with it, in New York there was Seneca Army depot, was an awesome hunt could shoot 5 deer while there. About 1.3 the population were white deer and you had to get drawn to harvest one of them. Nothing sucked more than seeing a toad 10 pointer (5x5) walk under my stand and bed down and all I could do was watch...

If they can run out of that 40 acre plot and you can't, it sounds fair to me.

Sounds fair to me, they can still get away, they aren't tame, sounds good!
