call shy coyotes
« on: September 02, 2009, 08:33:31 PM »
Alright, I was at one of my regular delivery stops the other day talking to a woman who live close to me out here in Yelm. We got to talking, and she said that her and the neighbors have been having problems with coyotes. I said I'd be more than happy to help her, just to be a good neighbor  :chuckle:. The problem is that since this whole area gets hunted pretty hard, she said that they don't respond to calling. They come up to the house in mid day, but won't come to any type of call that she's tried at any time of day. This woman actually offered to pay me to hunt them on her property! I said that I'd be more than happy to do it for free, and I could probably find people who would pay her to let them hunt there. She said that she won't allow strangers on the property for any reason, and she would preffer if I hunted it alone. I don't blame her as she has had problems in the past with theft/vandalism.

Now I'll be totally honest. My coyote hunting skills and experience are nonexistent. I've played around with an electronic caller a few times, but I never got anything other than a couple of ravens and a hawk to respond. Do you more experienced guys have any advise on how to hunt call shy coyotes? I'd love to help out a friend and bag a dog or two, but this may be a serious challenge.

Andrew

:)I dont know where your property is, I hunt some Yelm areas. Some I can work in the day time and there is enough room for a rifle. Out on the loop road I have some places, shotgun at night is the only way. real quiet calling small animals, mice etc. red light, at night they will follow the easy way in on trails etc.. good goose load or so, I do not like heavy buck shot, #4  and #1 buck work good, or Heavy shot "dead coyote" if you got money :)
There is a lot of stock out there.

use some more uncommon calls. yotes will come into any sort of distress call and if they've never heard it they may be even more interested. try chicken in distress, maybe some distressed kitten. mix it up and change where you call from. good luck

Try howling. You may get a territorial response.
