What the?
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:43:57 PM »
Hey y'all,

I didn't know there were so many different kinds of birds. How do you ID the birds? Does WDFW have a guide or something?

Also, how many different kinds of upland birds are there around the Snoqualmie/ North Bend area? Where are some good general spots to start looking? (not asking for your secret spot) Just got a little spaniel who's chompin' at the bit to get after something that ain't 3 hours away.

Thanks,
B

Let me clarify a little. I don't know why buy I always go back and look at my posts and think they need clarification.

Anyway...I'm not asking for any certain spots, but I see people talking about elevations, etc. Can a person just go out to a spot above a certain elevation and expect to find birds? What about walking along logging roads? Can someone walk the roads and see birds, or do you have to get out in the woods? Thick woods or clear cuts?

Thanks for the help.

B

Buy a map of the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest; so you know you are on public land.

Buy a hunting license and P/U a FREE copy of the hunting regulations or visit the WDFW website.

Google: ruffed grouse and then blue grouse for pictures of the two most common forest grouse species.

Try walking gated off roads or old abandoned slash roads in the National Forest; look for berry patches, creeks and springs and you will find grouse. The ruffed grouse will be low and the blue grouse will be high (generally). You will remember your first grouse flush. :o

So is it legal to shoot grouse off the side of those little old logging/slash roads up on public forest lands?

On the abandoned/overgrown/not-in-use ones...YES. Most are blocked off by an earth mound and/or a pit.
