Balloon over muzzle

Does putting a balloon over your muzzle to keep rain out affect your point of impact?

No it does not. I have used tape as well.

I have always used a strip of black electricians tape over my barrel in wet weather.  I have seen balloons and even condoms used.  None of them will affect your accuracy.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

the gasses leaving the barrel will blow off a balloon or tape well before you bullet leaves the muzzle. no affect on accuracy

So should I use Magnum condoms for my Magnum rifles? :chuckle: It wouldn't bother me to run into a guy in the woods with some electrical tape over his barrel, but the minute I hear dueling banjos and see the guy with a rubber over his barrel, I'm running the other way and never looking back!

A good thing to use is an ear plug.  You can squish it right down the muzzle end of the barrel and not worry about any adverse effects.

actually what works the best is those condoms that you can buy as a gag gift (the real real little ones) they fit just perfect and theirs none of that lube on um

I'm not sure what rubbers cost these day but it seems a bit silly to buy them to put on your barrel when electricians tape is better, more practical, and way cheaper. I think some of you watch to many movies. My BS meter is pegging right now.

Electrical tape here and it will save your rifling.

I use electrical tape.  Cant remember where I read it, but some hunting magazine actually did some testing to see if it affected accuracy, using some sort of shooting machine.  They used 5 different calibers from rimfire up to a large magnum if I recall.  Funny thing was, 4 out of the five shot BETTER 3 shot groups when they had a piece of tape over the end of the barrels before each shot.  The 5th gun was an almost identical grouping with or without tape.  Was kind of a cool article.

I would not recommend an earplug in your barrell!!! Stick with the sticky stuff like electrical tape. It's proven and cheap and no barrell plugging.

:)I wonder what the odds are of a rain drop actually going down your barrrel? Do you carry your rifle "muzzle up" in the rain?
I bet the odds go way up with a 17 or 22 caliber! :chuckle:

None of this ever occurred to me.....when I go out I assume I will be running something through my barrel when I get home... inevitably I end up with crap in the barrel....when it never gets shot in the field this is what happens I guess :chuckle: :chuckle:

usually it is just tree needles but I did have part of a maple leaf fall out once as well I just figured this was one of the things that happens when you spend time in the brush, the gun didn't come with a special muzzle cover or instructions on protecting it from the forest...who knew  :dunno:....I think electrical tape is the way to go ;) you all can use condoms if you wish seems a bit weird to me  :chuckle: :chuckle:

read the same article. I think it was Field and Stream. Anyway, I am going to start using electrical tape over the barrel...I think its a good idea, I just never remember to do it.

I started with a balloon but it ripped to easy, then went to electtape, wirh snow it can come from all directions that is why one gun got rust in barrel.

I just stick the muzzle into the dirt, get a good plug to keep all the rain out (just a joke kids - don't try this at home!).
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

:yike: I'd have to agree with Galpster on this one... you never know what could happen if you actually plug your barrel (vs. covering the muzzle). :yike:

I don't like to clean my gun when I'm hunting. My first shot is always off. Does a little rust move shot placement? How about running a bore-snake through your barrel when you get back to camp? No oil?

gonna give you guys the hook up. i can't believe these things i'm using havn't gone mainstream with rifle hunters. been using them for a couple years, end up giving them most away to friends and others i encounter out in the snow and rain.  in the muzzleloader section at sportsmans warehouse or whatever the store is called today, you will find a box with a dozen or so black muzzle condoms, they are meant for the muzzleloader crowd and even come with cap protectors to keep rain off.  these things are awsome, and slide right over the top. a real treasure at less than five bucks, surprised they are not also marketed to rifle hunters their loss i guess.
go check them out.

So should I use Magnum condoms for my Magnum rifles? :chuckle: [/quote]

Since they are in my nightstand, I might as well try them :chuckle:
