I picked up some tracers at the gunshow awhile back. Last weekend when I went coyote hunting, I carried one with me to part take in a little experiment

Unfortunately the fog was so thick, the experiment was innefective

. Anyone who has any military background or knowledge about tracer ammo, fill me in on what to expect if I nail a yote with one of these loads. I'm assuming nothing that a regular hollow point wouldnt do.

It depends on the round we had tracers that where steel jacket. If it is not steel jacket yes it will be like a hollow point.

Make sure you check on the legalities of using tracer ammunition. Seems to me they were illegal to use for hunting at one point. I don't know for sure, just don't want you to get in trouble.

The tracer won't do anything a non tracer would do. I believe they are illegalt use for hunting. Regs may have changed, but I thought I read where they were illegal.

I thought about the "legalities" before I posted. Its more likely illegal to hunt with them, even coyotes

I read the regs last week form cover to cover for something to do. Tracers are illegal to hunt with, as are lumi-knocks.

I wouldnt advise it because of the accuracy..Also dont know about it but they would probably carturize the wound when u hit the animal. Good coyote is a dead coyote. Bring out the solid lead bullets....happy huntin Justin

Also for those who may not have used tracers.....be sure to clean the barrel very well after shooting them. Tracers are very corrosive.

Thanks for that tip. I have only shot maybe a half dozen through my rifle. I was kinda skeptical on what they do to a barrel.

The only rifle tracer I have shot were shot in the early 1960's and were '06. More recently I had some .45 ACP and they went down range in a corkscrew pattern. Looked to be about 18" from side to side.

A couple years ago at the Boomershoot, one of the fellas with a .50 cal set a grass fire with a tracer that ricocheted so watch your back stop.

BTW..Boomershoot is a little shooting contest in Idaho where the targets are explosive and thus the Boom in Boomershoot. Targets are about 2 " at 350 yards and 4" at 500 and 6" at 700 yards if I remember correctly.

That sounds like a fun shoot over in Idaho. I was looking at buying some #1 55 grain hand pulled tracer bullets off of Gunbroker.com and doing some handloads. They are fun to shoot. I most likely wont put too many of them through my rifle, but my cousin has no problem throwing them through his Rock River, so I'll let his gun be the guinea pig

i was just getting ready to say this also had a buddy try some out on the 4th of july one year and never cleaned it. come hunting season the barrel looked like 40 grit sand paper inside completely ruined his barrel

anybody have a source for shotgun tracer ammo?
sounds crazy maybe, but i've seen it before and would love to find some for training purposes.

They'll have them this weekend at the Puyallup Gun Show. We shot a few through my cousins beretta automatic, they were pretty lame. Especially at five bucks a shot.

Aside from some .22's I've never seen tracer ammo that wasn't military pointy tip hardball. I know hunting regs require an expanding tip. Beyond that you're just putting a flaming bullet into flesh. Um..burning coyote guts.

They reminded me of an expensive roman candle! They were intriguing anyhow, but thought Id save ya a few bucks!!
