marlin guide gun

any one have one? I from time to time hunt some thick stuff and was thinking that i might buy one for next season but would like to here some opinions first thanx JB

Love mine.  I walk around some thick stuff near our camp each year with just my 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70, a sling and a pair of shooting sticks (in case I have time).  I also replaced the buckhorn rear sight with one from "One Ragged Hole" (ghost ring).

They're fun guns. I've owned both the 45-70 and 450 Marlin versions, and my brother has one in 444 Marlin. I don't really know why I keep selling them, but I just never hang on to them for very long. Put some ghost ring sights or a scout scope on there and you're good to go. I'm not impressed by the factory buckhorns.

If you want to have fun, get a BFR in the same caliber. That's the ultimate rifle/revolver combo package.

I have one in stainless.  Love it for hunting the timber.  I put a limbsaver recoil pad on it, and it has a 2x7 scope.  Aperture or peep sights work well on em', but aren't fantastic for low light.  A 1.5 x 5 scope would probably be ideal.  If you handload, you can work up some pretty hard hitting rounds with the 45/70...factory stuff is on the lighter side of pressures.

The 1895 is preatty much all I carry on all my guided hunts it is everything you will ever need. If you are serious about one of these
I would look into a bear extractor and a loop lever for the colder season. The marlin is a very acurate rifle so dont feel bad if you would want to put a 2-7 or just a fixed four power scope on it. I would look at WILD WEST GUNS web sight. I run a goast ring set up and a scout scope and wouldnt trade it for anything. I have killed many animales from deer to big brown bears with my 4570 and it just keeps comeing with me.

Yeah, I also put a few Wild West Gun extras on mine:  A happy trigger kit and a bear proof ejector.

Ruger Semi-Auto 44 Mag Carbine with a Red Dot scope. It's compact,  light and deadly.  it will also shoot the same ammo my 44 mag side arm.  Great for Hogs, bear and big game in the brush. 

Mine has never let me down.

check and check you guys want scopes or any thing else with those or will the rifles alone be fine?

Probably the most perfect hunting firearm I'm aware of if you shoot enough to be proficient with iron sights and aren't recoil sensitive (which is mainly a symptom of not shooting enough..)  



I sold mine to DeadDog because I found an 1895 LTD III that is prettier and serves the same purpose.  The LTD III is a lot less fun to shoot off the bench though.



The Guide Gun is very accurate.  Here is a 50 yard open sight target



The Guide gun was not finicky about ammo, it seemed to shoot everything well.  The 45-70 is an excellent cartridge for hunting.  In 2007 my GG took an Idaho Black Bear and all who witnessed the event described the performance as "devastating."  The load was a mid-level lever gun load pushing a 425 grain bullet at a mere 1450p fps.  Complete north to south pass through, and as far as anyone knows that bullet is still going.  No tracking was required.  The permanent wound channel was about the size of a broom handle.

99.9% of the time in the field we are carrying our rifles.  The GG is light weight and compact.  It doesn't get much better than that.

 I have the 1895 Cowboy. It's one of my favorite guns to shoot. I couldn't imagine being stuck haveing to shoot factory loads. I can vaporize a gallon jug of water at 100 yards. Very impressive!!!

I also have the Wild West Trigger. It's a huge improvment. I've also tossed the factory sights and run WGRS

Have never shot the GG but I'm sure it would be a good one to own someday.

i have a 1895G in 45/70. i love it.
it kicks pretty good, but not too bad. my 14 year old daughter loves shooting it also.
proper shot placement and it will take down anything native to north america. it is used as a back-up gun for big game in africa.

I have the Marlin 336 in .444  its accurate and puts a hurtin on anything!

Ive put mine up for trade on here before but then turned away some reasonable offers...

funny, I dont use it ofetn but hate the idea of getting rid of it!

Ive tossed down many many hogs with mine!
