Preditor Calling - Different Techniques

When I am out and I begin my calling I know when it is just right.  Somedays I can't get it to sound the way I want and others I am dialed in!

I have seen dogs come into a lot of different calls that I have used in the past years, shoot I have used a elk cow call and had dogs come into it, twice!

I find though that over the years that some of my practices are much more producing than others. 

I like several different types of calling!

Fawn Distress
Bird Distress
Coyote Long howl - search
Coyote Short - Challenge
Coyote Fight or ass whoopin
Coyote Serenade

I like to use these calls in a certain sequence, my favorite being:

Fawn in distress, three different bursts lasting 15 to 25 seconds a piece, with about 15 to 20 seconds in between.  Then silence for 5 - 10 minutes if not longer.

If no dogs come snoopin around I will give the coyote ass whoopin, sounds like a dog getting the *censored* beat out of it!

If there is a dog that was pist about someone getting a meal in there area they will really be peaved when they hear more than one dog fightin' over it.  Many times I have seen the dog(s) burst into your area after this!



I guess my point in all this is what do you like?  What do you use, electric or reed?  I am a reed guy myself!

from all the callin i have done i would say from what you are saying that you are not waitin long enough only 5-10 min? then going to yote whoppin you need to stay with you distress call longer i do almost the same as you with my mouth calls. but i do three sets in about 20-25 minutes before i switch calls up for about the last 10-15 minutes i am on stand. what calls you usin elec or hand? i always start soft incase there is one close then loud then med if i see a yote or any preditor i switch to lip squeaks to finish. hope this helps you

i dont even know where to start with this one, but one thing i do know is it sounds like you'd be a good partner to have in the stand predator calling.

Your calling is probably fine. Usually it is the setup that gets you busted.

so far I have only called for bears and bobs......have not even tried coyotes ....

Doesn't matter what your after.
The setup is a huge factor. Watch where the sun is. I worry more about the sun highlighting movement more than the wind these days.
I've had plenty of critters come in with bad wind. But if they see you move.............GAME OVER

I got pretty good with calling. Never really timed anything, just got to my spot, stayed quiet for a few minutes then started with whatever my gut feeling said too. And i dunno bout them seeing you matters. I always just wear my sweatshirt and blue jeans but sit in a clump of bushes i cleared up a little bit to act as a half hide, yet with that set up i've had a coyote pop up 20yds away and stare at me like "And just who are you!" then up comes my gun and they kinda understand by the time im pulling the trigger. Had one once watch me moving around and only run up when i stood up. He got 50yds away and then barked, then stopped and looked around as i fumbled my gun, then ran.     Anyone know any good calls? I use reed ones

Get a buddy and both of you have the primos hotdog, and challenge each other from a distance.  Watch them yotes come in hot and pissed off.  In areas of heavy deer traffic, use a deer in distress call and rattle a fence.  A wise yote will come in for a easy meal.  The call that i have had the most success with , is the primos catnip.  With a closed reed it is very easy to operate, and i have never had to worry about the reed sticking in cold temps.  Hope this helps.

I never thought of rattling a fence with the call!!!!  Thats BA!

I always start with a few howls and then wait. Sometimes they will come in just to see who's there. Then I just start hitting fawn distress, cottontail, and etc. I always finish with pup in distress. I mix up the e-caller and hand calls and sometimes use them together. Just depends on the day.

I usually start out with some crow or woodpecker distress for a couple minutes then into some fawn or rabbit. I also like a couple goat sounds instead of the typical fawn.

If nothing shows after about ten minutes then I use some yote barks or howls and a little louder rabbit distress. Then just before I leave I will often use a bark or howl followed by pup distress.
