Turkey hunting & snow
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:48:35 AM »
So where i go turkey hunting (Teanaway area) there is going to be plenty of snow in the hills I'm afraid. I go to the same place every year and i always end up getting a bird later in the season once the snow melts away. But i know the turkeys are still in the same area when the snow is there. I was hoping someone had some advice on hunting turkeys where the snow level is real low. If you had any tips or past experiences you could share that would be great.

I find the turkeys tend to head up the mountain with the snow. some time if there are areas high up bear of snow but belts of snow between the bird will be at the higher elevations in the opening.

Have you found the turkeys to be as active whether its vocal or just out and about when a lot of snow is on the ground and its still in the low to mid 40's

It's can be hit or miss most of the time. but if you find a good pocket of them on a sunny day and you can get them fired up. I know a spot around here that the roads are always snowed in until late April I found the birds there one year shed hunting I had to hike in a little over 2 miles this was a few days before turkey season and the bird was hammering all by him self. but there was solid snow until you got to where he was at and there was lots of bare ground.

I think we dwell on it more than the birds do. My first bird was on a snowy day, this year my Daughter shot her's in a snow squall with 1/2inch on the ground. While it may hamper them a little this year surely made me understand...turkeys still do turkey things in the spring snow. I talked with the guy who manages the campgrounds in Teanaway once. As an avid snowmobiler he said even in the dead of winter he comes across turkeys and tracks all the way up on top Red top or Yellow hill. So I beleive it's more our own misconceptions than anything. :twocents:

That could be very true. congrats on your daughter betting a turkey to. Wont be able to drive very far up the roads so it looks like I'm gonna be doing a lot of hiking on Monday morning. Good luck if you are going out for yourself on the opener!!!

The snow they got Sunday I doubt sticks long or is even still there. Saturday seemed to be high up other than a couple pockets in the shadu areas. Definitely a lot less snow than they had over there the past few years. Trying to cross the river may be a challenge if needed though.
