Well been kicking it around to buy 1, but do no which ones to start looking at. I am going to Iowa turkey hunting this spring if I get drawn and I want to use a muzzy. Any advice?

I have been hunting Turkey for the last 6 years with a Muzzle loading shotgun I do not use my 12 gauge pump any longer. I Shoot a White Tominator 12 gauge M/L shotgun in fact I have two of them. This shot gun out patterns or patterns as well out past forty yards than any shotgun I have seen.

You can get a new old stock From Doc "The designer of the White system bearing his name" on his site and also read about the shotgun. I use a .664 extended turkey choke that came with the shotgun http://whitemuzzleloading.com/


I have also heard good things about the Knight TK2000, I have not shot one or know anybody personally that has one.

Either way you go you will have a great Muzzle loading shotgun that will make the hunt that much more intense

i have shot a knight tk2000 and it shot very good it was cool but i like my browing bps better like the fact of mutilple shots when i have 2 birds come in i got a doubble this year but they are fun to shoot.

I just started a thread on the turkey forum, Smoke poles for turkeys. I've used a CVA Gobbler side lock for years, lots of fun.

I have shot about 12 turkeys with the 12 gauge muzzle loader. I think it is the only way to go.

I used a 12 gauge flint that I built on all but my first turkey. The first bird was a CVA side by side. That gives the opportunity of two shots, although I have never needed it.

I use 90 grain of ff a plastic shot cup and equal volume of number 5 or 6 shot.

I have used unslotted two piece shot cups which work well some of the time. The shot may not separate from the cup, like shooting a slug.  I have killed birds to 3o yards but most less than 20 yards. I have missed two birds when I feel the shot didn't separate from the cup. I use a standard shot cup now.  I used traditional wadding for many years but the plastic shot cups easier.

I use a very thin over shot card.

I have taken ruffed and Blue grouse on the wing as well as Quail,  Chukars and Huns.

I bought but haven't used a 12 gauge barrel for my TC New Englander.  This gun has a screw in choke.  It will take a turkey choke, you must take it out to load

I have a Thompson Center New Englander 12 ga that I use for upland hunting and it is a load of fun!  I haven't used it for turkeys but only because I haven't gone after them since I got the gun.  When I do get out again, it'll be with this gun and the full choke tube.  It patterns pretty well out to 35 yards or so with two 1/8" felt wads over 90 gr of 2f goex, 90 gr of # 5 lead and a thin over shot card.  The felt wads are very dense 100% wool that I cut from Durafelt stock and lube with T/C bore butter.  They'll go through a full choke easily and I'm sure would fit through a turkey full tube also.  The felt kind of squishes through and then returns to it's shape after going past the choke.  To get the overshot card in, you slightly bend it, slide it into the barrel, and ram it down tight against the shot.  Whatever gun you end up with, don't limit yourself to just turkeys!

I agree make sure you have the option of changing chokes or that the choke is useable over a broad range.

I have four chokes for my White Tominator and I use it for Grouse as well as Rabbit.
