I'm planning the Bowhunter Education Instructors Training ( IST) meeting for March and need to line up a guest speaker, I thought you folks out here might give me some ideas what or who you would like to listen to.
Last year we had one of the instructors who did Lama packing into his hunting areas. It was great and he brought one of the lamas right into the building to deminstrate.
The meeting will be in the Seattle area or Issaquah .

While huntin with Alpaca's or Lama's or Goats would be kule.. Most of us don't have any. When I have ever gone to sportsmen's shows and such I try to watch presentations on calling and tracking and anything that the average hunter wants or needs to improve upon. Orienteering? Survival techniques? Foods in the forest? If you could get a survivalist to pass on some skills -more than just how to build a fire with wet moss, and not some mountainear that's going to talk about snow caves and ice axe arresting, I bet that that would be most interesting to anyone that's an instructor in any discipline of hunting.

How about emergency bow repair in the field and what simple tools, materials and equipment are needed.
Emphasis on bow tuning is probably the most important as it leads to good habits and cleaner kills. Good basics of tuning...not to technical or you just lose the audience
(to many people do not tune their bows well and develop bad habits like adjusting their sites to where their broadheads are hitting).

I agree with Jack.., I took the class last year and we had someone from Search and Rescue come in and talk. It was interesting, however I would suggest someone that could teach some survival skills. Most hunters are not prepared to spend the night in the woods if they become disoriented or hurt. I know some of this is covered in the course, but a little more in depth doesn't hurt anyone. Maybe contact an instructor from the Seattle chapter of MOFA, (Mountaineering-Oriented First Aid ). If nothing else this could help save a hunting partners life. Backcountry First-Aid knowledge is always a good thing. 911 may be hours versus minutes away.
I personally, am looking at taking the MOFA basic course. Just another feather in my cap for backcountry survival.
Just a thought.

i think it would be interesting to hear someone talk about hunting other states, in other words applying and building points what states have better opportunities for trophy moose deer elk over the counter hunts, landowner tags and so on. ive been applying for tags in other states for about 12 years. it can be very rewarding but some states are also expensive now. its almost as much of a hobby as hunting, always researching the next dream hunt.

Although I am not a bowhunter, and since you are presenting to instructors, how about someone to talk about current political issues surrounding hunting, and how all the hunter groups need to work together to help each other? Speak about strategies to increase hunter numbers to preserve the sport? How to get youngsters involved in hunting... Just some ideas...

Thanks Iceman,
Good ideas and these sugestions are always on our agenda. As a volenteer group the people who take the classes must be willing to do so because the class isn't mantitory.
Something like the Skagit hunt could push us into that.

It may be a Special deal if you could get a fairly well known person to speak. I think asking Jay St. Charles to speak and bring his father Glenn as a special guest would be awesome. The St. Charles family has made a huge impact on Archery in the State of Washington over the last 50-60 years.
