Kalama River?
« on: January 19, 2010, 04:52:26 PM »
Hey all.  :hello: I'm over here working in Kelso for the next couple weeks and I'd like to do some steelhead fishing when I get some time. I was hoping to get a little advice from anyone who has fished the Kalama  :dunno:. Maybe some good areas, what kind of setup/bait you would use. I will be fishing from the bank. I fish for steelhead exclusively on the snake river and I use the drift bobber/jig/shrimp setup but looking at the Kalama I'm not sure that would work since its a fairly fast moving water. Anyways any help would be appreciated. Thank you!  :chuckle:

Bober and jig are about all I use on the Kalama anymore.Lower river is pretty much drift boat water,I like to get up higher, in the canyon, not realy a zipper lip location, you'll notice that by the trucks at just about every turn out. The dead line will produce fish, but also produces alot of other fisherman, I'm not much of a fan of close quarters fishing but if you hit the deadline and there isn't any or many other rigs there it's a good start.

Thanks Tonto I appreciate the help. I'm not a fan of bumping elbows either so hopefully I catch it on a day thats not to bad. Never fished for steelhead anywhere but the snake so fishing a smaller river like this is gonna be a new experience for me. Do you know how the fishing has been there lately?

I have had good success drifting sand shrimp and easy eggs in the canyon as well. I have not been up there in a few weeks, but the river is usually very clear so the lightest line you feel comfortable running is probably your best bet.

I suggest you give the store a call and talk to one of the Orzel's. They have been on rthe river for over 30 years and know it better than anyone. If you want to get into fish and learn a whole lot in the mean time I would consider bookinf a trip with their son Rob Orzel. You can reach him at 360 673 3557. Also you can reach the store at 360 674 4690. Good luck and tight lines!
