Oregon elk/deer

I am doing research for an archery elk/deer hunt in Oregon. Purchasing points in other states so thought I would try an OTC in Oregon this year.

Anyone willing to provide pros cons of eastside vs westside for elk in Oregon. ( based on what i ahve sounds like better bet on west side for Roosevelt)

Any decent general deer areas?

Suggest any pack in services on the far east side of state

Can help with elk areas in Washington around Yak and Ellensburg

This is my first year applying there too.  Yeah, I was pretty pissed when I downloaded the regs and noticed that they had almost doubled the prices.  I already had set the money aside based on the 2009 prices...

If you subscribe to Eastman's Hunting Journal, the member research section has a great breakdown for Oregon, just last month.  That is how I did my choices.

I hunted non-res in 2009. If I hadn't found a heck of a bull elk honey hole, on the wetside, I doubt if I'd pay the 2010 higher prices for non-resident hunters. I had 3 racked bulls in under 50 yards and a few other cows & couple bulls passing by outside of range. And location only 1/2 mile in from a gated logging road. By pure luck, I truly stumbled upon this small area with intersecting trails, bedding cover and clearcut edge only because...
I was looking for privacy and a downed log away from the logging road that morning if you know what I mean  .
Very surprised that in the two 3 day trips for elk, how many other archer's on mtn bikes or hiking passed by my area. You will have lots of company hunting OR. For 2010 season, my treestand will be set up in this same area.

arrowed both a 4x5pt Roose bull and a late season December 3x4 blacktail. The bull elk came from west of Portland, the buck from the Evans unit down south. Both hunts were unguided and public land. Well the elk was taken on private timber company lands, only open to vehicle mainline access on weekends.
I did a lot of research and the branched bulls you will need to draw for on the eastside. Recommend you scout areas now or in the next month if possible.

Oregon puts out good reports and a good map for access areas. Doesn't tell or show you everything but gets you a good start.

eastside can be good,  always a few 300"  plus bulls running around.

I cerainly wouldn't recommend starting the points game in Oregon with their new prices, nonres tag percentage and deer/elk management it just isn't worth it. If you are just wanting to hunt cause its over the counter thats different though. The only time I bow hunted the eastside I was suprised at the amount of hunters even several miles back in. I am still a few years away from the elk tag I started applying for nine years ago and when I draw I am done. I did put in already to get into that drawing they are having for a free license next year. nwhunter

Bought a subscription to Eastmans. Hopefully will gain some insight on the state of Oregon. Will keep putting in for points in other states.

I know there are better states but Oregon is close. I hunted idaho pretty hard last year and noticed a lack of decent animals after the wolf introduction.
Used to be a great state. What a shame

Thanks for the link MVAsled. Will get out and scout. Started using a treestand 2 years ago for elk. ( Hunted over 20 years for whitetail in treestands)  Not the most exciting way to hunt but can be successful

This will be my third year in a row hunting eastern Oregon.  I'm hooked hunting the last week of their early season.  I like the Desolation Unit, but are a couple other good ones close by.  I have never hunted western Oregon.

I'm moved to Wa from OR a couple years ago murders creek has the most animals hands down in the state if your going for a cow I would hunt the saddle mt unit on the west, pine creek has great bulls on the east all depends if your modern or archery send me a message I'd be glad to help you out!

Feel like a kid back in school again studying all of the regs,otc units,  draw percentages, deadlines etc in the western states.

I know what you mean.  I went thru this last year (my first year applying out of state).  Going thru it again this year because I want to apply for more states.  Good luck!
