Special Late Deer Tags...
« on: May 11, 2007, 06:59:03 PM »
Lets post up our favorites and why...  I've never been on a late hunt but plan to put in for the Entiat units this year along with everybody else... this is only my second year archery hunting but I believe I have around 5 points... looking to get my first special permit tag!  ;)

Good luck to you, but the point system seems to have a few flaws , I know people that have never drawn a tag. One guy has well over 20 points :bash:. Myself I have been drawn several years in a row :chuckle:. I do hope however you are one of the lucky ones.  ;)
That's my one shot.

Several years in a row? Do you mind saying which permits? If you're talking about the late mule deer buck tags, I find that hard to believe. I realize it is very possible to draw a good permit with no points, but to do it even two years in a row seems very unlikely.

Oh, and to answer the original question, I can't really say I have a favorite. I'd take any of the Chelan or Okanogan late buck permits, or the Desert. I suppose if I had to pick a "favorite" it would be Desert, but only because it's the most difficult to draw. Which units I pick depend on how bad I want to draw that year, and that usually depends on my schedule and what other hunts I have going on, especially out of state hunts. This year I probably simply make my decision based on which hunts have the least number of applicants to give myself the best chance of drawing. Doesn't really matter, because they are all much better than any general season mule deer hunt.

I'm sorry I didn't realize I was in bow hunting, however the points system is the same in modern firearm. We were drawn 3 years in a row under the group hunt.

The only way to have 20 points would be to turn poachers in. Max points will be 12 this year i believe...
I have 9 for elk and 4 for deer.

better draw fast. have you seen how much they have raised the permit numbers in the entiat area units?? late buck rifle went up to 65 in the entiat unit, and all the others went up as well.   Bye bye quality hunt.  it only took em a few years to srew it all up. good job wa fish and game.

I haven't had a chance to pick up the new regs yet... but that really sucks!  You'd think with the last 2-3 years of late tag success that they'd get a clue!  That combined with the late archery entiat season they had a couple years back I believe has really set the heard back a ton... Maybe they're trying to compensate for how much the 'Valley is getting developed...  :o :bash:

I'm putting in for an any deer tag Stormking probably.  Not hunting horns, just meat.  Although a 3-4 pointer is plenty fine for me, I am taking my 13 year old nephew so I just hope he shoots his first deer.

As someone who has spent alot of time hunting in the entiat river area. Before it burned and before the talk forums made it a madhouse, I can tell you it is ruined.  Yes there are alot of deer and a few good bucks but, the way it is being managed, and the carrying capacity after the burn doesn't even compare to pre-tyee fire numbers and quality.  Entiat unit in particular is basically a road hunting unit,as there are not any places to get more than a mile from a driveable road.  Just not much cover left so the deer are very visible.  I have hence changed my late season picks.

What everyone else said.  Any of the late permits are great.  WDFW has screwed the Entiat unit and will screw the rest up also.  20 points and not getting drawn is a reality.  I personally know a guy with 22 points who was not drawn.  Yes he did turn in two poachers and more should turn them in.  No one has drawn a late big buck tag two years in a row.  Doe tag sure but not a big buck tag.

I'm sorry....if I had 22pts. I'd be putting in for the Desert unit no doubt!  I'd put the bow away for a year and hunt the rifle season in there.  No way a guy shouldn't get drawn with that many pts.

I agree with the above. WDFW knows how to screw things up. I can't believe how many tags they give out for late rifle...and don't even get me STARTED on how muzzleloading has as good or better season(s) as archery for early elk...
They screwed up the Swakane unit back in the 80's after the huge burn, allowing thousands of does to be slaughtered with rifles in December...and it still hasn't returned to it's "glory days".   They'll continue to screw things up and reduce the quality hunts.  It will become a rich man's sport and you'll have to pay to play...

So how do you fix the problem with WDFW? :dunno:  Do you go down to the local office and turn in written complaints?  Do you write your congressman or local official?  Who makes th3ese decisions as to how permits are allowed and so on?  I we all stopped hunting and fishing for a few years then it might send a message!  But that's not going to happen as we all know.  So what the hell can we do?

Show up at the meetings with about five friends or more.  Have a plan with all of you asking different important questions.  They start to ignore one person asking questions so stage everyone around the room.  Make them answer you with real answers.  Bottom line is one person can not do it.  Also join your local MDF and RMEF chapter and start making them own up to what they advertise.  I think all the local chapters need to start making a point of how pathetic the current board and decisions they make are.  Bottom line is vote for ROSI and put pressure on him also.

I think that a person that turns in a poacher (and the poacher is convicted) should get the tag of their choice the next year and not just some more points. We have got to do more about these vermin, the WDFW doesn't have the manpower to be everywhere at the same time so it is up to us to cull the herd and I think that would be a great incentive !!!
