Those turkeys are heavy! Especially two.

Set up at the bottom of deep ravine in the Blues foothills. There were a bunch of  gobblers gobbling in some trees. I set up waiting for them,
but two showed up from a different direction and silent. No gobbling from the tree. They must have been in front of my hen decoys for 10 minutes before I noticed them. I was set up in a creek bed and with the camo blind on the edge I could not see them. I finally noticed the tops of the fans. Big, but imature toms. I planned poorly, so I had to stand up to shoot. Quick draw plugged the first turkey, swung over and plugged the second. Done before 6am.

It was a 45 minute hike up a steep hill to the car. Those turkeys got heavier and heavier.

I really  wanted pics. I fire up my camera and it says my batteries are dead.
At the truck, I have a camcorder, but nobody to operate it. My hunting partner shows up and I have nice videos of two dressed plucked turkeys.
BTW. These two turkeys were looking for love. The crop on both were totally empty.

The sad part of shooting two Rios, is that you can't try for a slam. (eastern, rio,merriam).
I am now only eligible for an eastern this spring season.

Oh well, there's always next year.  Taking nothing away from anyone who takes two birds at one time, but personally I don't see the need.  Why ruin a potential future hunt.  Question is does it really feel any better to kill two at once or one....I guess I feel just as successful making a clean kill on one and hunt another day using the other tags.   

Also much easier to pack out one, as you well know...lol.

For two people, two turkeys are alot. Alot of leftovers that is. Looks like turkey for the next week.
Roasted the 14lb, deep fried the 18lb. At least we know what we will be having for dinner the next week.

Congrads ... I bought an orange blood proof bag with straps (Cabelas I belive for $10) ... you can fit two birds into and wear it like a backpack ... I fold it up and put it in the inside vest pocket ... fits just over my dekes and other garbage in the back of my vest when I come out ... no blood down my back either. Been using it for 11 seasons now ....

You know what is funny is that my hunting partner who never listens to me, now is asking for advice.
I think he is used to hunting turkeys in the deep woods not the conditions where I was.
You know how turkeys drum, well he thought that was a grouse. If it was a grouse, it would have been way out of its natural range.
Also, sometimes that so called grouse gobbled like a turkey and the female grouse sounded just like turkey hens, but what do I know.
