Stock protection
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:38:54 PM »
So last year when i was out hunting I got into a lot of rain (big shock) and the entire stock/wooden part on my gun turned milky so i wiped it off and put it away and ever since it seems to have lost its stain the wood looks dull and is all rough. Im just wondering how do i restore it and what do i use?
Happy Hunting :)

Well, it is difficult to restore just one section of the stock. I have try to do this and it just does not match up.. you have to strip the whole rifle and restain the entire thing. You can get a good stain stripper at Home Depot, get some steel wool, lots of sand paper in different grips and a nice space heater to let it dry. I recommend TWP water proof stain, clear then go over it with the type of color stain that you want. This will take some time and the checking is very difficult to do. So if you are pretty good with wood, go for it, if not, save yourself the time and $ and get another stock from a gunsmith or online at stockysstocks.com If its a fairly common factory rifle, there are plenty of options.

Good luck!

Or you could have the stock dipped and it would look brand new.
Plastic or wood it doesn't matter.

How does that hold up to moisture on a wood stock? Does it seal the wood?

It holds up great. Wood stocks get a primer/sealer than base coat and 2 coats of clear  either flat/gloss or satin.

Care to tell more about dipping it?  Who does it?  Is it an epoxy or what?  Gloss?
