Skyline Drive Pics-Maryland-
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:32:27 AM »
From my moms cousin:
Subject: Trip to Skyline Drive

Well, I'm a bit slow, but am finally getting the pictures ready from our trip to Skyline Drive last week.  We stayed 2 nights at Big Meadows Lodge, our favorite part of the park.  And, as we always did since the time the kids were very little, we kept track of all the wildlife we saw:

64 deer, including quite a few fawns and several bucks

3 bears - that is our all-time record for a visit.  The first one I didn't get a picture of, but we rounded a curve and there in the middle of the road stood a huge fellow - and was just standing there broadside, looking at us.  Just like a picture on a postcard.  He was pretty quick to ramble off into the woods, but what a thrill - that's the biggest bear we've seen!  The second one was a scrawny little fellow, probably last year's cub.  The third one I got lots of pictures of - he was in a huge ant hill, just going at it, digging and eating and having a great time.  He was right by the side of the road, outside Ron's window.  So we were able to stop for several minutes and get lots of pictures - believe me, he wasn't interested in much but getting those ants - you can see them up his leg and on his face.  He was probably a 2-3 year old.

1 turkey

1 box turtle in the middle of the road, with his neck extended all the way out and just looking all around!

1 chipmunk

1 squirrel

and 1 skunk, right in front ot us as we were walking out of the room going to the car.
