My Father-in-law has a place south of Ennis (Cameron area). He hunts elk in the Madison range area, I cannot remember the drainage, but could find out. It is private access, surrounded by 2 large ranches. I am not sure of where the public access is. He goes to E MT to mulie hunt if that tells you anything. But there are farmers around that he has hunted on and taken at least one Large whitey.

We elk and deer hunted near there probably 8 or so years ago. We didn't do any good for elk but we saw tons of deer every day. They are around!

We went late and we saw both whitetails and mulies depending on where we were. On the drive in to where we were hunting, the fields and draws were loaded with whitetails. We probably saw over 100 per day easy. Once we got to where we were elk hunting it was all mulies and we would easy see 100+ deer per day with a number of smaller to medium sized bucks. I ended up taking a pretty big 3x3 towards the end of the hunt.

I would do a search and try and find out about the wolve situation there. I used to hunt a little north of there and seem to remember an article from a year or two back concerning a big sheep slaughter by a pack of wolves. Just something to consider.

Its hard for me to say with any certainty as it has been a few years but when we were there we saw tons of deer everywhere. There was a few times where we were working our way towards elk and had to work our way through and around probably 3-4 different groups of like 20-30 deer. We didn't get an elk but the weather broke records as far as warmth so the conditions were tough. We were there in November and it was in the 70's.  :bash:

Sounds like wolves are all over the west side of that state,  we usually hunt in the breaks for deer,  considering an area for both deer/elk if possible.
