Warden is SE of Moses Lake about half way between Othello and Moses... The turn off of Hwy 17 is just South the Sullivan damn Rd (S end of potholes) and E... The turn off of I 90 is U rd about 10miles E of Moses lake (Hwy 17 I 90 intersection). the sign in and weigh in is at the airport hangers. They usually have a sign out next to the main Rd... I'm going and have a good time... The entry includes a dinner after the weigh in and the raffle... Last year I they gave away a .17 rem fireball i believe... One of the local farmers won it and let them redraw someone else....

I didn't hear how last years derby went  :dunno: I did hear bad things about the 09 derby though, But I might be interested if it is a leggit derby and the entry is reasonable  ;)

Yeah, I didn't here how it went either.  09 was fun, but winners bringing in like 20 dogs or so if I remember :dunno: Seemed a little too shady to me to want to do it again. I'm bettin some of those dogs had freezer burn. I also remember hearing about guys running em down with quads and greasing em with shotguns.

Last year they changed the payout so that the most dogs didn't pay out as much... 2 years ago there were concerns about  "Team Hunting"  when the 19 dogs showed up... Last year there were about 70 teams and about 80 dogs killed... each team is a 2 man team.. Pay out last year payed out top 3 for the Biggest Male, Biggest Female,  and then the most number of dogs... I like hunting dogs, never won any money, came close to getting drawn on a rifle last year, and enjoy the feed at the end of the derby... The area encompassed in the derby is pretty big... I know more details will likely be forthcoming.... If you want to make some $$$$ kill the biggest dog..  :twocents:

In the past i heard rumors of airrial gunning , Chasing down with snow mobiles and shot guns,And setting up numerous bait piles a week in advance .
20 dogs in 24 hours , not at all hard to do if you have say 10 friends all sitting over diffrent bait piles for 24 hours .
$2000.00 divided x 10= 200.00 each for a days work while drinking beer, sitting in a warm truck and watching a dead pile . plus having bragging rights = priceless in some minds  :bash:
now if it were a calling contest i might consider going .

last year the payout for most number of dogs was $300 i think.. 2 years ago it was 500... I want to say the payout is $300, $200, $100 in the most #, Biggest Male  Biggest female... If you want a derby that is as pure as the wind driven snow participate in the one online here.... ANY time you make money a apart of it, it will taint it... I think the payout  of last years curbed a lot of the team hunting.  :twocents: I'm guessing they will have a similar payout to last years...

A friend of mine went 3 years ago and said it was horrible, a joke. Where can you hunt ? I delivered all over that area and everything is private property from what I know. Why is it starting at night ? I'm kinda shaking my head.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Thanks deereman.  Sounds like you guys are making some good changes to insure a better quality contest.  Might be a good idea to post up the entry fee.

Good luck to all of those participating.

What is the hunt area? Is it anywhere in Washington? Or within a few miles of Warden? Is there a list of rules? Any more info would be great.
"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted..If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job." That "largest male" prize category.  Is that for the largest hunter or coyote?  I have a chance at one of them...

Just wanted to share some pics of the roundup and some info.
35.18lbs Largest Male    30.98lbs Largest Female  81 dogs 58 teams Smallest dog 17lbs

I think the female was the largest they had ever had... at least in the past 3 years or so males have been bigger tho... one truck brought in 6 of the nicest looking yotes... light color and good fur... About half of the yotes had mange... Had 2 3 leggers in the group... We got 4 dogs and the brother in-law bloodied his new R15... We didn't get in the money for any of the dogs..Sweet shooting gun.. Dinner was awesome BBQ pulled pork from an FFA pig.   The guy that won the gun was from the tricities area... older cowboy that has been coming to the roundup for 4-5 years he said... For the long range steel dog shooting competition there was a lot of big talkers but not many that could hit the target at 515yards...
I had a great time and plan on it next year.

I had heard that NW Sportsman did an artlice on the Warden roundup. When i was filling up my truck i thumbed though it and found it..  I thought it was interesting because it talked a little aobut the Arial gunning plane called the DOG FIGHTER based out of Othello. You guys should check it out.. Its this issue is a lot of fishing(which i don't do) but did have some other good article about hunting Eurasin colled doves and some of the big deer and elk taken in Wa and Or.  :twocents:
