That's funny I saw this thread. Neighbor called me last night. Had a few coons coming up and eating the cat food on his deck. He invited me over to solve the problem.

I had the same problem a couple of months ago. Notice I said "had".

My hounds just told me tonight they want to go hunting  8)

Hey bucklucky, how often to you hit the woods coonhunting? I'll be heading out to Ft Lewis in July for a few years, maybe longer dpending on how this east caoster likes it, haha. I'll be looking to get me a started dog once I'm there and will need someone who knows the terrain and doesn't mind a tag-a-long.

This goes for anyone else too. I'll be living down around yelm area once I find a place too rent that is hound friendly and has a garage/shop for me to put my welder and metal.

How would one go about hunting them?

Spot and stock at dusk?

What kind of firearm?  shotgun or rifle?

With or without dogs?  Without, you could walk creeks with a headlamp and look for eyes, not as hard as you think.  With dogs I free cast them or turn them loose and walk with them down the creeks.  My dog likes to go out and then comes back and checks in every 15 or 20 minutes, unless he hits a track.  LOTS of fun!!  I use a .22 pistol, but a .22 rifle works just fine.
