Good deal or not.

Hello all,
 I am new to bow hunting and a complete novice. I bartered out a bow the other day and was just wondering if i what i got is good? It is a Mathews Reezon 2009 model came with hard case, 2 quivers one belt and one removable one mounted to the bow, around 24 arrows 7 being broad heads it has a tru glow 5 pin site with a whisker bisket rest and he threw in a block target as well. It is in like new condition. I have shot a bow once about ten years ago and thats it. I normally hunt modern or muzzy. My friend and i going after a multi season tag and figured we would give archery a try. $500.00 dollars is what he wanted for the package i am out of pocket $180.00 plus 2hrs of labor. I was told Mathews is the best but i am sure that is a matter of opinion. Maybe this is not a good starter bow? or to much bow for a novice. Any opinions or advice is appreciated

The Reezon is a good bow, I'm not a Mathews guy but its a great deal for $500.

Very good deal for a setup like that. Take it to a pro shop and have it fitted to you and checked out. To make sure everything is o.k. to start flinging some arrows

Thanks for the offer Bearpaw but from the sounds of it i got a steal of a deal. Let me think for a minute..........naaa think i will hang on to it.   LOL

That is an awesome deal. I have the same bow, bought it new for $1200, with sights, rest, quiver and a dozen arrows. I shopped around for a quite a while and shot many bows. The Reezen was by far the nicest one I found. That was a year and a half ago. Summer 2009. I can almost guarantee that you won't find a nicer shooting bow.

i have discovered it is a Reezon 6.5 but was told that the 7 is better for beginners. You guys have any opinions one way or the other, or does it make that big of a difference?

The 6.5 or 7, is in regards to size. I am 6'1", with a 29 1/2" draw, and I shoot a 6.5. I believe, the 7 is bigger.

That is a steal!  I would give you double your money if you wanted to try out a different bow! 

The 6.5 / 7 refers to the brace height.  That is the distance from the back of the riser to the string.  A 7 would be slightly better for a beginner, but I would never pass that deal. It is more noticeable at longer distances so keep your shots close until you get more experience.

Like was already mentioned - get it to a shop and have them paper tune it.  Then check out all of the arrows.  Make sure there are none that are the least bit damaged.  If you see any deep scratches or "dents" in a carbon arrow - throw it away.  It can be dangerous.

Took it too the bow shop and got it all checked out. It didn't need a thing, they measured my draw length and even it was set up right for me. Thank you all for the advice lets hope i can post some pics this fall of a nice dear i took with it. Experience tells me it might be a year or two before that happens and i get proficient with the bow and stalking.

Not sure if its been mentioned here yet but find a good instructor and take a few lessons. It will take years off of your learning curve. Also get out and shoot some 3d's. Great hunting practice and even better for yardage estimation practice.

I found that a lot of accuracy, came from repetitive shooting, and developing muscle memory. It also helps you get in shape to shoot. You will find that you will discover muscles you didn't know you had.

Good advice man. I picked up a bear charge 2010 last friday off of seattle guns and have shot it everyday since i got it and plan on doing so till the season starts. i can already feel my draw getting smoother and i'm quicker to get my pin where it needs to be.

 I have a ton of questions but i think i may start a seperate thread for general bow and archery related stuff in the next day or two.

My hunting partner and i are both greenies and we have a mutual friend who shots competition and is going to teach us both. I am a member of the Machias gun range and they have a great archery range along with one hell of a target course set up in the summer. So we will be spending allot of time their practicing and be schooled by a professional.

How do you like that bow? My father-in-law wants to take up archery, but I don't think he wants to spend the money on a new Matthew's. I suggested a Bear, for the price range, but I haven't shot them much.

To me it seems really nice and easy to shoot, smooth.   Now that being said I know nothing about bows. But i had  couple of guys who do tell me its a really smooth great bow for the money, and very easy to adjust to fit your needs.
