How long til our fishing is polluted with radiation?
« on: April 20, 2011, 06:43:15 AM »
Just curious to see if everyone believes the government telling us we have nothing to worry about when it comes to radiation from Japans disaster.
I notice they say we have more radiation from the sun. This is man made plutonium vs natures sun??? They have tested in Spokane, and Minnesota, what about the west coast before it travels over a couple mountain ranges???
Whats your thoughts??

I think your time would be better spend worrying about being struck by lightning.  If you worry about it, all it does is keep your risk about the same but drastically reduce your quality of life.  I'd suggest focusing on the things we can change.   :twocents:

Well seeing as Russia dumps their nuclear waste in the arctic ocean and has as long as they have had a nuclear program..... gotta say it isnt worth worrying about.  Ours is sitting around in little barrels like rows and rows of little dirty bombs just waiting to go off  :tinfoil:

Got Tin? I noticed the price of tinfoil has already gone up in the stores. What's a little more radiation anyways?  Most of us have probably built up resistance to radiation. And for the ones that don't all I can say is be grateful die young die pretty!

Haven't heard what the latest isotopes are but they were initially talking Iodine 38  or 138 (don't remember the exact number), anyhow it has a half life of 8 days.  So, if a particle left the the reactor between 2 - 2 1/2 weeks later it would be gone.  Gamma radiation is another story.  Haven't heard any info on that.

Biggest question is, how much is leaking?  Is it the equivalent of 50 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1000000 ppm?  Just to put it in perspective, a teaspoon of salt in a quart of water is 5000 ppm.

Some more questions.  How long does it take the ocean currents to run from one side of the Pacific to the other?  What fish migrate from the West coast to the Japan coastal areas or vice versa?  How long do the currents take to go from Japan to the Gulf of Alaska?

I've also heard them discussing the amounts that showed up here in WA.  One number I heard was 5000 times below the allowable level.  They were saying that you get more Iodine radiation exposure visiting Denver.  Several reasons, the altitude (less atmosphere) and the natural radiation in the local rocks.

At this point I'd be more worried about the number of xrays I receive each year than this.

I'd worry more about the sewage in the Puget Sound than Japanese Radiation.

Same here, Sewage, and exhaust/oil runoff.

But while I don't personally worry about much of this stuff, I really appreciate those who do, because I think they help create a balance. Maybe most of the enviro stuff is fake, or maybe its not.

I would say that you have about as much of a chance of gettig a radiated fish  , as you would to have you nads caught in a bear trap before the state outlawed body gripping traps  :yike:
