new deer/elk/bear rifle is dialed in
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:01:56 PM »
i picked up a weatherby vanguard carbine in 308 the other day. the rifle is ported, bedded/floated and has a custom trigger set at 2.75lbs. i topped the rifle with weaver style redfield bases and leupold rings, and a cabelas pineridge slugger (shotgun) scope. i have used the scope 2 times in the past with wonderful results and being strapped for cash i figure i should mess with success so i bought another one

spent the last week getting is sighted in and its shooting 1" 5 shot groups at 100yds with cheap fmj wolf ammo. i cant wait to see what it shoots when i get some decent ammo. should be a 3/4" or less rifle if i do my part.

i can tell you one thing with the ports, the rifle kicks about the same as a 243, but sounds like a 300 ultra going off.  :chuckle: first range session i forgot my ear plugs  and that will never happen again  :bash:

Sounds like a nice rig, can I ask why ported?

i have a "twitch" i need to get over when pulling the trigger. and i had a choice between this rifle with everything already done, or a complately factory one in the same caliber. i chose this one because i know the recoil would be lighter and the trigger would also help a bit too.

and after shooting 100 rounds through it, i can see it has helped out a bit. the more i shoot now the more ill get over that "twitch" i hope

Sounds like a fun new rifle.  Hopefully you can get it bloody.  Also, might want to keep a box of that wolf around.  Some rifles like that stuff and can actually shoot worse with the 'better' stuff.

already ahead of ya on that one. not really a fan of fmj ammo for hunting. but it will get the job done that is forsure. and with the gun shooting it so good im not to worried about what ammo i use
