Good Pistol for Blacktail Hunting
« on: June 25, 2011, 06:14:05 PM »
My dad is disabled and looking for a good pistol for deer season.

What are the rules as far as minimum caliber you can use? Are automatics okay?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated! :camp:

Yes, autos are OK.

Big game, except cougar, may be hunted with
handguns with a minimum barrel length of 4
inches per manufacturers specification, and
fire a minimum 24 caliber centerfire cartridge.
The minimum for cougar is a 22 caliber
centerfire handgun. Rimfire handguns are not
legal for big game.

2 of the best out there

1 on my list is the weatherby CFP! Mine is in 7mm-08 you can get in most the 308 case calibers. It is a tack driver and shoots outstanding! I will be whacking some lopes with it this year.

2 t/c contender or encore handgun. The contender has less calibers to choose but can be found for pretty cheap and it still has some great calibers like 30-30 and such. The encore you can get pretty much any cal like 243/30-06/308/7mm-08 and so on.

I love hunting with a handgun and have taken a few animals with them. Look forward to seeing what he gets and hope to see some animals he smacks with it

I like the contender a little more than the encore because it weighs less, plus playing with loads like 30/30AI and 35 rem make it a lot of fun. with the contender or encore you can use the same frame for a lot of stuff just buy new barrels, so far I have a 14" 223 (coyotes), 30/30 AI (deer), 35 Rem (Elk) plus a 10" 44mag barrel for easier carry that said most of the areas i hunt you would do well with a super blackhawk hunter in 44mag or 45LC.
