I dont hunt over salt, but I have used it to keep elk gathering in a certain drainage. Id look for a saddle or a ridge crossing, or out on a lonely ridge with water close by. The key is to have it positioned to call into from a distance to get a bull going.

I have my blocks at the bottom of a natural funnel near a creek in the timber. The elk are hitting them hard

Please consider putting the blocks on hard rocky ground.  As the weather breaks down the blocks it will leach into the soil and the animals keep going after it and that makes for some pretty ugly ground.  Also best to keep the same area active year after year. The game will seek out the licks yearly.  Come fall when the grasses dry up their need for salt really declines.  Spring time they will visit the licks about every 3 days.
