Skagit bay (or close) crabbing
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:19:34 AM »
So if I get released from Ft Lewis in time I am planning on heading up towards Mt Vernon the week of September 12th for some pink/early silver fishing.  Do you guys think it would be worth it to bring some crab pots and drop them?  I can get 3 or 4 from a buddy of mine.  Is that too many?  Is the area around the mouth of the Skagit river worth dropping pots?  If so what depths should I target?  I had another idea to fish the sound for a bit while the pots soak.  Good idea or not?  I have very little experience fishing the sound so any help is appreciated.  Thanks guys

There's lots of good crabbing around.  Just remember you get two pots per license...

Thanks for the reminder.  There will be 3-4 people in the boat depending on the day

Check the regs on crabbing dates.

Labor day weekend usually concludes crabbing

The area @ the mouth of the Skaget is shallow. As you move west it gets deeper. Remember that there is fresh water coming out the river and the crabs will want to be in the Salt. I'd drops the pots to the west of the mouth and north toward the pass. I'm assuming that you will be fishing the river? The mouth of the Skaget has lots of sand bars, logs and is highly influenced by the tide. Make sure that you know your way around there. Once you get into the deeper water away from the mouth...every thing looks the same and it may be difficult if not impossible to get back. I've spent years out there duck hunting and at times it took me a while to find my way back. If i were you i would put the pots out on the North end of Camino in the morning and pick em up when your done fishing.
Don't spend your last day on earth saying "I wish I would have"
