« on: August 24, 2011, 01:44:45 PM »
My brother and I drew archery bull tags for margerat unit, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is ok to hunt the u.s.forest service between cold water lake and highway 504?

I drew Margaret some years back.  You should have received a map of the unit in the mail showing the boundaries?  I went online and confirmed what I remember.  I just went to the WDFW Go Hunt mapping site.  It shows the North shore as being open.  South and the area you specifically asked about "between highway 504 and the lake" as out of the unit.  You might want to check out that site so you don't get into trouble for hunting in a closed area.  I know some of the area up there has been sold to private ownership too.  So be mindful of their land boundaries.

Thanks I will check that site out. I have been trying to find a map of the private section that was bought but have had no luck. How big of a bull did you kill when you drew the tag?

Just a nice 5pt.  The area I took him in is now owned privately I understand.  It was near Fawn Lake.

Cowlitz County Auditors map shows private ownership of the best 25 sq. miles of the unit and all of the high lake are inside the boundry, (Fawn, Elk, Hanaford, ect) the whole corner of the county changed hands twoo or three years ago and its my understanding the owners are saying no access!!!  :bash: I would sugest a call to the game department and ask them why? Think they are getting tax breaks and locking up a state resorce............ Good luck and hope you tag out!
Elk 23 for 30 but whos counting!
My son out did me his first year out at 13! 5x5 missed the book by 1 1/8" and Yeh I am proud of him!

This same question came up a couple months ago. The owner is St. Helens Noble Farms.

:yeah: :yeah: suposably they have it locked up perminate. I would not be suprised to find them charging a heafty fee to hunt elk. County map shows them with 25 Sq. miles of ownership!

What does the property owner plan to do with this land?

The only thing he does with the property is noble bows, it has been replanted with all nobles. By the sounds of it there will be no hunting on his property if up to him  :bdid: Maybe he will change his mind after the elk start destroying his trees

Any idea why he is so opposed to allowing a few hunters with special tags in to hunt? Is it just for the vandalism potential?

The land sales in that part of the Margaret has taken a lot of steam out of that tag. There are still elk but that area is so good it's pathetic. I have also been scrambling to figure out where to focus my efforts for my archery bull tag. It will still be fun but I drool over the thought of accessing that land!!!!!
