Can a 75 year old still get a deer?
«
on:
September 08, 2011, 10:58:42 AM »
My question really is can an older person (75) still hunt deer? I'm going to try this season. I am planning for whitetail in GMU 124. I can't walk more than a hundred yards so it will be taking a stand or road hunting, very early and very late.
I have a model 70 Winchester in .30/06 with a Leupold 2X7, VX1. I'll
pay someone to get the meat to the truck and I'm going up a couple of days early to scout and get permission. I haven't hunted since the late 50's, so any tips my boys?
Bob, the have camper. will travel far and wide.

i can't help much, but if you're gonna be hunting somewhere close i can help get the deer to the truck, no money though.
and 75 years is definately not too old to hunt deer. i knew a man one (my dad's frien) he was like a grandpa to me. he still hunted elk and deer at 95 years old!!
he died at 98 years

So you're planning on camping/hunting by yourself? If so, I think you should try to find a partner to go along. If you don't know anyone who wants to go, offer it up to the people on this board. There may be someone that would like to hunt that area but can't afford the gas to drive over there, or, someone who plans on going but is going solo like yourself. You could also a guided or semi-guided hunt with an outfitter. Check with Bearpaw Outfitters, he lives in that general area (the owner of this site).

I would say "heck yes" and good luck. My uncle who was 73 at the time went with us to Montana in -12 degree weather, helped me drag my buck and hunted hard up and down mountains for a week. I also have a friend who's grandfather hunted bear in the high country solo well into his 90's. Everyone has limitation's, as long as we know where they are, no problem
. Have fun.

75 is still young...I hope to be hitting it hard when I'm your age. Why unit 124? Can you shoot does or do you need a special permit?
I'd offer my assistance, but i won't be around till late Archery.

I would say it sounds like you have had an honest talk with yourself about limitations and expectations. Knowing your limits will help keep you safe at any age. So, with that, I say hell yes. Also, if there isn't anyone willing to help drag a deer and throw it in the truck for you it is a sad day. I would think with a few doors knocked on you may find access and help all in the same spot. If I had the land and somebody knocked on my door with your years traveled I'd say hell yes, hunt away and when you get one come get me and we'll get it taken care of. Don't quit living just because of a few clicks on the odometer.

My grandpa killed his biggest bull of his life at age 72....was still smoking 2 packs of Camels a day and drinking about a half case of "Animal Beer".....
With that being said....go for it....get yourself a partner and hit the hills......Your never too old to act young!!!

Oh yeah! A buddy and I took a 76 year old man to kill his first elk (and only bull); he could walk a few hundred yards. We helped him down the steep hill to a flat rock he could lie prone on, with a sleeping bag to be comfy and a strategically placed log where he could rest his rifle and cover an opening in the timber at the bottom of the canyon. We got him set around 6am; at 9am the first 5-point walked across, but he couldn't get on him before he was through. About a minute later, the second 5-point stepped out and he killed it with one shot from his .270. My buddy helped him back up the hill to the truck and returned with the pack frames, while I quartered his bull. A couple of hours later, he finally got to touch his bull when we brought the head and front quarters up. I will never forget the smile on his face that day.
A couple more hours, and we had brought the second load. That was one of the most rewarding hunts I've never packed a gun on.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when. No habitat = no game.

I say more power too ya. I hope I can still get out at 75. I really wish I could help, but i am in South Dakota now. There are a lot of good folks on this site, i will be very suprised if some one doesn't jump up to help out or offer a spot by their campfire. i bet you have some good tales to tell. Best of luck.

Good for you for wanting to get out... is there even such a thing as "Too Old" to go hunting? My step-dad's mother killed her Idaho Moose, elk & deer well into her 70's. If your concerned about your health you might even think about getting one of these:
