Collared Elk shot near stampede unit
« on: October 25, 2011, 08:47:10 PM »
I hate seeing this but I was deer hunting last Saturday on near the Stampede unit and saw a collared cow elk standing on a lower road. I glassed her and saw her left back leg was really big and she was gimping. She took a little hobble and her front right leg was all shot up too. She was shot at least twice and couldnt barely take 2 steps before having to stop again. She definately didnt run from us....because she physically couldnt.

I know this would have been against the law but man did I want to put her out of the hell she was living in! I left a message with the game dept but who knows what they do about that stuff?

Poachers? Indians? Lazy people not looking hard enough? Herd shooting for a bull?

Seems to me that there was at least 2 shots so if it were archary, they would have to be pretty close to get 2 shots in and with muzzy, 2 shots would be tough but still do-able i guess.

All Im sayin is how could they get to leg shots in and still not find the animal?

She did have a collar on her neck so hopefully when she stops moving they will look for the collar of where she is dead. Coyote/ Wolf bait now.

Horrible to see this stuff!

What would you do?????

That is sad, and a hard decision I think it would depend on where I was when I saw the injured animal to make my decision.

What do you think a game warden would do? Shoot it?

Call and report to the regional office for that GMU.  Likely they can find and put down.  Easier to find out exactly what happened before the critters get her.  If the injuries were on both sides I would say she may have got gored by a bull.

I would have to say the same. Not worth losing your hunting rights over but its real hard to watch an animal limp around like that  :twocents:
