late entiat archery buck
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:01:01 AM »
my dad, my brother, and myself drew entiat archery tags this year.  we were on good bucks  the day we got there and set up camp and for the most part all season long.  we attempted to put stalks on bucks every day,  for me they all ended the same,  unsuccessfull.  after nine days of hard hunting, and being the only one left to fill their tag,  i was finally able to put a successful stalk on a good buck.  the morning of the ninth day was exciting from first light,  my brother and i headed out and right away i was on a stalk on a large spike x five  that didnt work out.  by the time i got back to the truck my brother had another buck spotted, and off i went again, that smaller buck ended up feeding away into an unstalkable area.   so after a quick breakfast we drove to an area that we had spotted several great deer a couple of days prior.  on the trip up to th ridge the deer seemed nonexistant, nothing moving at all.    once we got to the top we decided to hike to a small saddle were we could glass the drainage below.  as soon as we crested the top we were busted!  80 yards out and well aware of us was a real heavy 4x4 with eye guards.  he didnt stick around long so we backed out and worked our way around the opposite side of the saddle hoping to cut him off,  when we got to the point were we should have found him, he wasnt there.   we glassed thehill above us and found him getting ready to cross over the saddle right were we first spotted him.  soo back around the hill we went as fast as we could go over dead falls and crunchy snow. the hill side he was heading for was thick heavy cover but we knew he would be in there, so my brother stayed back and i started working my way slowly through the cover.  one step at a time i worked through and after about 45 minutes i had pushed all the way through the cover and no buck!  he was gone.  i turned to head back to my brother and   decided to stick my head over the ridge into the saddle agian and see if i could find him,  and i did,  he caught me a little off guard at only 22 yards.  before i knew it i was drawn and settling my top pin on him.  as soon as my arrow was flying i knew he was mine, he turned down hill away from me and went full throttle smashing trees and kicking snow and mud the whole way.   after a blood trail that seemed to go for days we found him tangled up in a dead fall, along way from any road and an even longer way from the truck.  it took my brother and i two trips in and out to get him off the hill but it was worth every drop of sweat and being sore for a week, to harvest my best deer to date, and to get to do it with my brother and my father.   the pictures are of mine, my brothers, and then my fathers
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!
