Browning A bolt Trigger adjustment
« on: December 19, 2011, 09:43:41 PM »
Any body adjust the trigger on their a bolt? Just looked at my instruction manual and found out how to do it. I might take it to a shop to find out what the pull is now, then adjust it and see what it ends up at. Any suggestions as to what "hunters" have theirs at and why it is better? Building a long range rifle, got the scope figured out, next piece is the trigger. Then hand loads for my turret...

(1) Buy a trigger pull gauge. (2) If you're satisfied with the trigger as it is, don't change it.  (3) If it seems too heavy, take it to a qualified gunsmith.

My hunting rifles have triggers weights between 2 1/2 and 3 pounds, which is on the light end for factory triggers.  Benchrest rifles have triggers measured in ounces, but they're generally not safe for field use while hunting.  The other factor besides weight is "creep": how much the trigger moves before it fires.  No creep is what you want.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

I got a Timney trigger spring "kit" for my A Bolt. Not sure why they call it a kit- it's just two springs of different weights, and you simply choose the one you want to use, and replace the stock spring in your A bolt. It takes all of 5 minutes. My trigger was about 5 pounds and that was adjusted as light as it would go. When I replaced the spring with the Timney spring, it's now at 2 1/2 pounds.

It's worth a try and no gunsmith is required.

I agree 2.5-3lbs is about right for hunting, light triggers and numb fingers don't go together well.  If you don't have a trigger pull gauge you can get buy with a piece of string and some mooching weights.

I did the same thing on my 300 WSM, made a huge improvement. BUT... my main gun I use is a 300 weatherby and unforunately the WSM sits in the gun safe most of the time, I took it out to shoot it this year and the first 2 shots surprised the heck out of me. Seems like over time the spring has lightened up, I haven't put a trigger scale on it since but sure seems to have lightened up. Anyone ever experience this?

Other than that, its well worth the small investment
