Night or day this time of year?
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:56:05 PM »
Hello all, I'm brand new to coyote hunting and figured I would start here for advice. I have a buddy who has been having some coyotes visiting his chickens  :EAT:, so I thought I would help him out. My question is, what time of day would be best for taking out some yotes? Are they more active at night or during the day this time of year? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Calling this time of year is pretty good. You can call day or night both can produce very well. I would give both a shot. At night they are more bold and you can get away with a little more.

Thanks for the help Carp. I plan on going out next weekend. What are you thoughts on decoys? I have a few different calls, but I am on the fence about picking up a decoy.

Sometimes I use them and sometimes I don't. Had mixed results with them. I have had the critter and run a edge quiver critter right now. If I was going to buy one right now I would buy the black jack from foxpro

Decoy are great for the reason they give the yote something to key in on. I have seen hungry yote run full speed at them. When placing the decoy if you have a idea where the yote will come from try to be not in its line of sight behind the decoy.

My buddy did that trying to get the coyotes that have been eating his chickens, but he missed, lol. He has had 5 chickens taken by coyotes so far, but that should hopefully stop soon. He said he has spotted 5 or 6 yotes at one time running around on his property.

I have noticed that the coyotes come out at different times depending on that specific area. They can still come at any time, no matter what time they normally are prowling
