If you were to...
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:01:25 PM »
If you were to buy a heavy barrel synthetic .308 which would you buy.  I decided to buy a new one and just curious as to what others like.  I'd like to be under 1000 on the GUN.  lwt me know whacha think.  I'm looking at a savage or rem 700 police model right now but I'm still open to options.  this will be a 500 yd and less gun but want the capability to reach out farther if need be..

The 700 gives a lot of options later for customization....and is always desired. Add a trigger and optics....you have a good chance it will rock.

My preference would be a M24 Remington; after all Marine Snipers live with them.  :twocents:
I shoot a Remington VTR in .308 and love it; max range on a kill was 197 yards.

I have a Remington 700 Varmint in a 223rem. It is a 26" heavy barrel. I changed the stock out to a Bell & Carlson Medalist M40. Rifle cost around $570.00 for the rifle and the stock was $218.00 at Stockeys. The 700 Varminter also comes in 308win. This way you can custom your rifle to you liking. :twocents:
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

I own a Rem 700P with a 24" BBL. I like it but she is going to get the Hart Barrel, Jewel Trigger and A Bell & Carlson M40 Stock

Savage with an accu-trigger and accu-stock.

There is much to be said for this combo.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

under a grand would be a savage.

any one would be a Sako TRG or a Desert tac
"Right now, I am thinking that If my grandmother was here, she would be lecturing me about how there are poor people in Africa, that would just love to have a Ruger, I would just say "Great, granny, lets just ship all the Rugers to Africa!"

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

Personally I would buy the Savage, but it would be a model 12 Long Range Precision, this way you get the much better Accutrigger rather than the hunting version. It offers a slightly different sear angle and lighter spring for a much improved trigger feel. I would also look at the HS precision stocked models offered in the LEO trim, the Accustock is a joke for precision work, the McMillan is another option but just more money.

Another option is to build your own. If you go to SavageShooters.com and look under Northland Shooters Supplies, Jim Briggs sells the model 12 Pricision repeater actions complete with accutrigger.
Screw on one of his CBI barrels find a stock of your liking and have a wonderfully accurate rifle.
