Reloading for levers!
« on: April 07, 2012, 07:49:05 AM »
Ok, I am psyched to get to fire my 30-30 lever gun reloads but as I am finishing up loading up my various loads a thought creeped in. I know that one of the hints you are getting near the max is the bolt will be sticky to open. In a lever gun you have a good amount of leverage on the action so I was curious if anyone actually noticed a sticking bolt in a lever gun? It's going to be a rush the first time I get to fire my own rounds!
I also declare I don't like the lee dyes. There isn't enough down movement in the seater. I had to crank it all the way down just to get the bullet seated far enough to get down to a good coal for my 94. I may have to make some shorter cases. That's gonna throw off my results for today a smidge I believe. Such is life I guess.

On a side note, I think I hate using the leverevolution powder. It's really dense ball so it is a PITA to measure. I spend about 3 times as much time on these rounds as I did measuring up for my .223 with varget.

Lever guns in general don't have the strength in lockup that a bolt gun does. Bolt guns also have a lot barrel shank to cause brass to flow back instead of give a sneak peak surprise. Most levers are rated for way less pressure for a reason. If you want to get a fix of loading hot for levers....get a 1895 in 45/70 and fill it with varget under a 400gr speer.......that will fix ya.

I run 33.5grns of BL-C(2) over 150grn hornady RN in my old model 94 and it shoots well out of it.  This is a mild load as I dont want to mess up my dads old 30-30, but it shoots very accurate out to 100 yrds.  I have no doubt it'd be accurate beyond that if I could see that fat
