We hunted elk in the Salmon unit in Idaho last October.  I heard wolves howling every day.  They were below us in a basin a couple miles away.  I only saw one small herd of elk the entire trip unfortunately.  One thing I just noticed though on the harvest stats from Idaho is that around 1000 hunters killed 230 or so elk in that unit for about 23% success.  20% of the elk killed were 6 point or better.  We spoke to other guys who got into elk including a 340+ bull, they just ended up hunting 5 or more miles north or south of where we were.  I hate what the wolves are doing to our sport but there are still elk there to be had, you just have to be more mobile and hunt where the wolves aren't hunting this week.  Washington can't offer up the kind of success Idaho can.  I saw a store in Darby MT where they had posted pictures on a bulletin board of all the local dogs who had their guts ripped out by wolves.  It makes you angry.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

Chris Ledoux...
