Aluminum canopy
« on: August 23, 2012, 05:13:05 PM »
I do not need a canopy all the time just want one for certain trips. I figured I would want a light one so I can remove it myself. I have been looking online for a couple days and I cannot find any local places that have any. sometimes the internet drives me crazy...
I want a aluminum canopy with side windows that open just like the back door.
any recommendations? also I see some driving down the road and I notice some with racks. Can these really hold any weight? And why is it every one I see there never is a manufacture name on it so I can look it up. :bash:
seems all the fiberglass ones do..
If its brown knock it down

Gemtop sounds like what you are decribing, but they are steel - not too heavy though :twocents:

I can pull the fiberglass one from my full size Ford by my self ( and the help of the simple pully system I have in my garage) - Eye bolts, 3/8" rope, and a couple of 2x6's  - I will see if I can get pics up.  Same system would lift a Gemtop as well.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

ARE makes one that looks nice. They have lots of configuration options to choose from on their website.

I went to a dealer just a few days ago looking at the fiberglass ones. They sell A.R.E. and Leer but they claimed to really like the Vista brand, which I'd never heard of them until then. They did tell me that with the roof rack on a fiberglass canopy you can put 350 lbs on it.

Personally I'm still on the fence, they told me if you take it on and off all the time it will not be long before it leaks. Which I would probably do, so I just bought a tool box for know and will try to find a used canopy if I really need it. I couldn't sleep in mine anyway the bed is only 5' long  :chuckle:
