would you?
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:19:04 AM »
let me start by saying a few things
1. im a complete gear junkie and spend way more on hunting/hiking gear than i need to
2. i have all the respect for people who can do more with less
3. this might be a terrible attitude to have but i cant help but think this way
now for the question: ive got a friend whos hunted his whole life but never backpacked or hunted very far from the rig, hes in good shape and a successful hunter and is one of the few people i know that likes to spend close to as much time in the woods as i do.
he has approahed me about coming into the backcountry with me but has the opinion that he needs gear no better than his romeos and a $10 walmart backpack strapped to an old ass pack frame, some carharts, and a coleman bag.
so am i wrong to hesitate taking him? am i wrong to expect he shows up with halfway decent gear?

Trial run in his romeo's this summer...steep and deep....one night, 10-12 miles round trip. That'll learn him.
There's one thing to be the gear whore versus getting by with less, then there's another thing being completely unprepared.

I don't know about that. He may learn a few things. Being out and possibly teaching a friend would not be a wasted trip in my eyes. Maybe he will be good with the gear he brings....we are all different.

Every one of us had to learn at some point. If he's really a friend, I'd let him try it out. I betcha an overnighter this summer would set him right....then you've got a good friend who enjoys your passion for doing what you do.

Ok.....he hunts hard just not that far from the rig. Really it sounds like he is up to par and if things don't work out exactly like he thinks he would either suck it up and keep hunting or hike out on his own. I would let him worry about his gear because it sounds like you aren't worried about him.

i remember my first alpine hike in the snow many years ago. went with basically 1/3 the gear the pro's had. i was fine. had all the skills just not the gear load. they giggled when i pulled my $1.95 plastic tube tent from my old leather boy scout pack, set it up & packed snow all around it. the more it snowed the warmer it got. do wish i had gotten snow shoes though.

ive been thinking that, a summer banzai run and see how he does on an overnight and if he wants to do more. really know some miles out.
my other thought has been if i can find the right approach is to just let him borrow my wifes pack and sleeping bag so at last he'd be set there but i dont want to come off as a D.

Freezer....quick story about presumptions we (I) make...

Was going to a fun bowling in shoot and was hanging out with some buddies talking guns. In walks a girl with a butterfly sticker decorated glock....no kidding...butterfly stickers. Well.....I being (at the time) a true Kimber snob snickered and made jokes. Well, she shot right before me and just smoked the course. Far far far better than I. Try not to be to critical of his gear...only his ability if you think he is over reaching.

i would not take him if he doesn't get the minimum basic gear he needs to be comfortable.

i took a guy last summer for a two nighter to my favorite high mtn lake, who had talked like he had backpacked into lakes. needless to say he had way more crap for a summer trip (cloths), and fishing gear one would never need or use for these type lakes.

well we get about 1 mile from the lake and he is out of water, dehydrated, tired, and ready too quite. not happening i pack whats left in his pack (he had been dropping needless stuff as we went from my prompting him too) plus mine the rest of the way, spend whats left of the day fishing and one night. then boogie out the next morning because he might have troubles getting out.

people who don't have the stamina or proper gear can flat ruin a trip fast,by leaving early (one car situation), whining all the time, and getting hurt the worst scenario.
trips of this magnitude are planned out way in advance, plus vacation time ruined, and quite possible the only trip one can afford, or can be gone for in a year.

he was apologetic though, but still ruined a two night three day trip, and my quest to fish another near by lake that has eluded me for years now. well this year i guess.  :twocents: :bash:

i did this with a different friend last year, pretty fit guy, has been saying he wants to hunt with me but never has hunted ever before so we went way in, weekend of september 30. got into elk and has a bull screaming at us. no elk season so we snapped some pics.
he's set to finish his hunters ed next week ;)
that trip was about 24miles in 28hrs. i thought he was going to drop but it only hurt for a few days and he's been talking about it since
