Late archery elk, is it better or ?
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:13:51 AM »
I worked so much I did not make it out once for modern, then i remembered I never got my tag so I can still hunt late archery  :IBCOOL: I sold my bow a few months ago but last night at sportmeans I was hooked up with a brand new PSE, they are closing out at $299  :rockin: so, is it worth it to hunt late elk or is the rut etc all over and not worth it?

Late season is my favorite time to chase elk. I hunt cowichee but you have to have some snow to get them migrating. All you got to do is get between them and the feeding stations.  I know an awful lot of guys do this same thing in the Nile too....

Does Snoqualmie get much of a migration?  I'd guess since the pass and snow it should, if you get near the snow line...assuming we'll ever get enough snow.

If I had to hunt there I would do like snowpack said. Get up into about a foot or so of snow. I dont know much about the west side. But if there are any feeding stations Id get within a few miles of them and try to get between the elk and there food. :IBCOOL:

Probably not if you haven't put any time into it.

It's always worth getting out in the woods unless you can shoot one while watching the Hawks.

 :yeah:

Late season you are obviously losing the rut advantage, but you gain other advantages:
-it's a lot quieter in the woods
-it's open in most units for bulls and antlerless
-weather conditions can be a positive factor- snow usually makes elk easier to locate, even if it's not a migration area, cold makes elk feed in open longer at times

I believe most of the archery harvest happens in the late- lotta cows get stuck.

Can't get'em unless you're out there, that's for sure! My :twocents:

depends on what unit you go to and how many other hunters are there.  have hunted Winston late for antlerless only and have seen some but to far to shoot and to open to sneak up on.

Lack of scouting will hurt BUT if you want to get out and enjoy the woods go for it. Even if you don't get an elk you will learn an area better. At least you be hunting. Late archery can be fun!
