noob at the range right now gettin frustrated

at the range right now by myself with my new wolf. first time shooting a muzzleloader. pyrodex powder 100 grains, great plains 385 gr, RWS caps. should there be a slight delay between the cap going off and the shot fired?

Shot ours for the 1st time a few weeks ago, people have asked about a delay but honestly I didn't notice any delay at all. We have a Knight disc extreme and an ultra light.

When the hammer drops that gun should go off. No noticeable delay. Something's askew. Take it apart , clean it and re-try.

Gonna call it a night. Groups are all over the place still has a bad hang fire been cleaning nipple and barrel after each shot.    Just gonna start over tomorrow

Not sure about the hang-fire but that's probably the reason for being all over the target.  Make sure your caps are tight on the nipple and there's nothing clogged up. We were shooting 2 or 3 before cleaning. Was everything good and dry?

Ya everything was dry. Those great plains were super hard starting also.

When I put the powder in I tap the Butt of the gun on the ground to try and settle the powder. Then just push the bullet down nice and snug. Are you Making sure everything is completely dry after cleaning? No left over oil/residue in the nipple or breach?

Absolutely not...

How big of a delay are we talking? A muzzleloader will always be slightly slower in ignition than a modern rifle. You might not always notice it, but I think it's pretty normal. Maybe more so for a sidelock than an inline.

Stop doing that!  No need.  It's doing more harm than good...

Should be able to shoot at least half dozen rounds before things get gummed up. I've shot a couple dozen just to see if I could.  Knight bighorn, pyrodex pellets, rws musket caps.

Forget the Q-tip routine you are getting to much moisture on the nipple and delaying the cap spark. When swabbing with a patch squeeze the excess moisture out of the  patch and use it twice for the next shot after flipping it to the other side. You are getting everything too wet thus the delay or hang fire. Use a nipple pick after a miss fire and keep the ignition dry.
