My brother and I got drawn for tags this year. 12 years of applications.

Looking for some advice on where to set up a base camp around the boundary.
We have horses and could get mules. Is it worth it to bring them in?
Any good tips are welcome.

Welcome to HuntWa.   Should be a real good hunt with the stock. Be sure to write up story after your hunt successful or not.

Yes take the stock. Be sure they are very comfortable with steep, rocky, overgrown, steep, rough terrain.

Don't take the stock unless they are comfortable climbing steep, gnarly country.

You didn't specify what tag you guys drew? If its elk I'm real sorry for you guys. No elk there. You should check out the bigfoot thread starting on page one. It will enlighten you on why there are no elk there.

OK, all humor aside, welcome to the site.  This web forum is active, because there are so many hunters in Washington.  We hope that you stay with us, even after your watershed hunt is finished.  There are a lot of "cross over" hunters (OR to WA, WA to OR) here, and we could learn a lot from you.

Use the search function, "mill creek watershed" as there are a lot of threads that have been written about this jewel.  Have fun, and please share some photographs (nobody is allowed into the watershed unless they have a hunting tag, so 99% of us will never see the inside of that area).

It is an Elk tag.  But I'll shoot bigfoot if I see him.

I grew up in Washington and moved to Oregon a few years ago so I've continued to apply to cash in on my points.  It took longer than I thought.  We're both very excited to do this hunt.

I was just going to check in again and see if anyone has good ideas on where to set up base camp around the watershed. T-9 days before were out for the hunt!

Depends a lot on the weather.  It can happen quickly down there and wall tents will collapse under snow (I had one do that there).  We have had success camping low and driving up to the unit to hunt.

I like to make coffee in my cabin and then walk the 40 yards to the boundary and scratch my head and wonder who in their right mind would purposely shoot something in there

Have you been able to scout the boundary yet? Aside from camp set up, do have a plan from which end you'd like to attack it? Setting up camp depends on a lot. As far as stock, same story. They are effective only dependent on where you dump in. Pretty gnarly from the top, but decent from other areas. Hunted it last year from the top, not easy, depending on where you plan to drop in, I may be able to offer some advice, let me know. Good luck, can't wait to return, although I don't know why, it's brutal.

A good place to set up camp is around ski blue wood, or up a little higher around griffin peak. The other side of the water shed. You can go up tiger mtn rd. that's up mill creek on the Oregon side.

I went up there Sunday and took a look around.  Wow it looks like a lot of work but that got the elk fever going.  We were trying to make an attack plan but we just don't know up from down.

I don't think we'll bring stock in it might be more hassle than benefit.  We might think otherwise if we get one down.

Where is a good entry point on the SW area? 

Thinking most people will go in on the west side and it might be less hunters on the east but maybe most of the animals hang out in the lower west side of that thing?

You guys are giving some good info keep it coming.
