Alaska moose, round 2
«

I had the opportunity to head back up to Alaska again this year to chase the big deer. Last years float trip was an incredible experience, hard to top, but not so successful in the tag notching department.
http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,140609.0.html
This year my hunting partner and I were invited to hunt with a friend who lives in Fairbanks, who is an excellent moose hunter, has a great spot and a plane. Let me tell you, that is a hell of an combination.
Hunting north of Fairbanks can present logistical problems but a crummy with an aviation fuel tank in the back and a river for a "makeshift" landing zone can cure many of those issues.
I can't go into a ton of detail as this hunt will be detailed in a national magazine (last years hunt was a feature article in the 9-14 issue of Guns & Ammo) and at this looks like it will possibly be on a hunting show.
We got some great video of bulls coming in.
The quick details, we cow called and grunted during the early stages of the rut. I was a bit skeptical but we ended up calling 4 bulls into camp, another 4-5 that we didn't see (but could hear) and there were bulls still moving toward camp when we were flying out the moose and camp, a two day process. Needless to say my skepticism has been removed and I am now a believer.
This whole "sit in camp and the moose will come to you" bit is tough to do. I read a 400 page book and gained 5 pounds but it works.
I got the meat cut and wrapped in Fairbanks, 3 day turn around, another benefit of being friends with a local. It came to over 550# of cut and wrapped meat per bull. Here are a few pics.

Looks awesome. I had planmed a trip to the Sheenjek River this fall but it fell through due to scheduling. Hoping to get there next year.. Looking forward to the show.
