clear as mud!
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:30:12 PM »
Alright, so the more research I do the harder things get! I switched gears a bit and am considering some different options. Option one is purchase a Rem 700 in 300 win mag. What are your thoughts on the 700 long range vs the sendero? Option two is to take that money and put it into my model 70 in 30.06, new stock, rebarrel, trigger, pillar and glass bed. I want to be able to take deer and elk out to 500 yards if needed. I would also like to stretch it out to say 700-800 just at targets for fun. What option would you pick if given the choice?

Just put the money into your model 70 and rebarrel it in 300win mag.

Jason, would the standard action of the .06 work for a magnum cartridge?

I believe its the same action, since the 30.06 and 300wm are the same COL, The bolt face and barrel would be the only thing different. Not sure what all is involved in either replacing or machining the bolt face to 300wm. I'm sure someone who is more familiar with the model 70 will chime in.

Pre-64 or post?  CRF or push feed?  feed rails going from '06 to .300 will most likely have to massaged.  as for the remingtons, either one will serve you fine.

buying a Rem700 is a crapshoot at best.
Look toward Sako if you want reliable accuracy.

I am leaning more and more towards building from the model 70 action. The group buy Benchmark has going seems like it is worth a look.
