Books on training hunting spaniels?
« on: December 06, 2015, 12:55:29 PM »
Hi guys,

looking to get my best buddy a good read on training spaniels. He got his first bird dog this summer and id like to help him but I have two setters and dont know the first thing about training a flushing dog, or a retriever. Can anyone recommend a good book?

Thanks
The deer are exactly where you find them, and no where you dont!

This is an excellent one, I used it to train my dogs both spaniels and pointing dogs, I even recommend it to folks training other breeds.  It has a lot of info that will transfer to pointing and retrieving dogs for the hunter.  It is a very gentle style of training but effective.

Here's a link to it at Amazon.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Another good one is Training Spaniels And Retrievers by Ken Roebuck; Gun Dog magazine sells it and the video. Amazon sells the book, too:

The Working Springer Spaniel by Keith Erlandson is good. The Simon Tyers videos are spendy, but good
. Also, have him come out to a few training sessions with the WWESSC if he has a chance to see if training with the club might interest him.
